Le MIMA présente "Studiolo", la première exposition muséale personnelle du français Jean Jullien (1983) en Europe, où les peintures intimistes de l'artiste prennent vie dans un environnement immersif de commentaires peints sur les murs et de réflexions sur l'environnement peints au mur.

"Studiolo" est une exposition qui célèbre la relation symbiotique entre l'art et le langage, mettant en valeur le talent exceptionnel de Jean Jullien pour fusionner les deux. C'est l'occasion de se lancer dans un voyage où le pouvoir de l'image et du mot écrit s'entrelacent, pour illuminer finalement la richesse et la complexité de l'expérience humaine.

Jean Jullien fait de la peinture, photographie, vidéo, création de costume, installation artistique in situ, livres, affiches et vêtements. Pour le MIMA, il est le prototype de l'artiste pluridisciplinaire au parcours non conventionnelle qui en partant d’un réseau social à construit une carrière illustrant un redéploiement du champ de l’art contemporain par le biais des ​ nouveaux canaux de communication. L’originalité de Jean Jullien tient en partie, à son talent à créer une relation avec sa propre communauté basée sur une narration en continu. A force de commentaires et d’illustrations sur Instagram ou ​ directement sur les murs d’expositions, il dessine un cadre affectif autour des peintures qui leur donne une profondeur sémantique supplémentaire.

Par ses études d’architecture intérieure, le dessin et l’aquarelle se sont imposés dans ses travaux artistiques. Curieux et passionné de bateaux et du monde maritime, il a reçu, en 2018 le titre de ‘’ Peintre Officiel de la Marine Belge ‘’ Stéphan vous invite à partager cette découverte. ********** Nederlands ********** Stéphan Aelterman schildert al zo'n vijftig jaar. Na zijn studie binnenhuisarchitectuur werden tekenen en aquarelleren een integraal onderdeel van zijn artistieke werk. Nieuwsgierig en gepassioneerd door boten en de maritieme wereld, kreeg hij in 2018 de titel van "Officieel Schilder van de Belgische Marine". Stéphan nodigt je uit om te delen in deze ontdekking.

********** English ********** As the daughter of the child who was left in the home, Greene traces her family story along the matrilinear line, and the resulting film enters into the gaps in memory and record. Máthair offers a fragmented and elliptical account of a search for knowledge in the face of institutional oppression and obfuscation; the film resists linear narrative and documentary modes, offering us an intense and revelatory encounter with a shared family trauma. Scant records and redacted documents describe the negation and erasure of those who passed through the church’s homes for unmarried mothers. The sensory lives of these ungraspable women are embodied in choreographed phrases performed by four dancers, whose costumed movements both gesture towards and subvert the constrictive clothing regulations of Catholic institutions and the forced female labour in the church’s laundries. Glimpses of this performance are threaded between a chaotic collage of archival material and present-day online chat rooms; the only respite is found in the holding space of the landscape and the bodies of water between England and Ireland. The silences of the archive are countered by a dissonant sound score, a pulsing polyphonic composition dense with complex sensory impressions, and a chorus of unvoiced voices compelling us to stay with the problem.     Keira Greene is an artist working across film, photography, performance and text. Her work is preoccupied with the social and organic life and landscape of specific environments. Her work is produced through a collaborative and conversational practice of looking, writing and forming enduring relationships. En 2024, sa petite-fille – la réalisatrice – retrace son parcours en reconstituant les fragments de son histoire. Máthair (Mère) s'appuie sur un réseau complexe d'informations obfusquées, provenant d'agences administratives d'adoption, des dossiers d'un foyer catholique pour mères et bébés et de conversations en ligne entre des inconnu·e·s suivant les mêmes traces d'archives. Máthair interroge les institutions religieuses, le concept de maternité et le sentiment d'appartenance à un lieu.   Keira Greene est une artiste qui travaille à la frontière du film, de la photographie, de la performance et du texte. Son travail se concentre sur la vie sociale et organique au sein de paysages spécifiques. Het Volk der Introverten is een geboetseerde menigte bestaande uit hoofdjes van klei met ogen dicht, gemaakt door vele handen. Onder leiding van kunstenaar Mirthe Dokter (Pollif Projects) wordt je meegenomen in een zoektocht van je handen naar jezelf, met de klei als vriendelijke bondgenoot. Door een moment gezamenlijk introvert te zijn poogt Mirthe deze kant van de mens meer ruimte te geven in het dagelijkse leven. Ook biedt het kunstwerk een podium aan de mensen die zich ongezien voelen. Je kan bijdragen aan het Volk der Introverten van Sint-Gillis door mee te kleien tijdens een boetseersessie. Jouw hoofdje wordt onderdeel van het kunstwerk, dat zo groeit en groeit. Dat kan tijdens gezamenlijke sessies, maar je kan doorlopend ook zelf komen kleien in de exporuimte, te midden van alle gezichtjes. De hoofdjes worden niet afgebakken, maar zullen uiteindelijk buiten geplaatst worden waar ze weer zullen verdwijnen. Terug naar waar de klei vandaan komt, opnieuw onzichtbaar.

********** English ********** Repetition / Erosion is a contemporary approach to the Cantigas de Santa Maria, a 13th century Galician song collection, through the lens of Erosion. Cantigas de Santa Maria is one of the largest song collections from the Middle-Ages, with a total of 427 songs. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the collection alternates poems narrating stories of miracles and praising Hymns. The overall work, written in vernacular language (Galaico-Portugues) is oscillating between courtly love tellings and liturgy.  Besides its literary and musical legacy, this work can also be read as a chronicle of both cultural and mystical life in Europe during the 13th century and reveals the blurred line between sacred and folklore. The project plays with different scales of time: geological, historical, musical and human. In constant evolution, the performance consist of a succession and/or superposition of repetitive tasks addressing the different aspects of the songbook : musical, poetic, iconographic, historic… ********** Nederlands ********** Repetition / Erosion is een hedendaagse benadering van de Cantigas de Santa Maria, een 13e-eeuwse Galicische verzameling liederen, door de lens van Erosion. Cantigas de Santa Maria is een van de grootste zangbundels uit de Middeleeuwen, met in totaal 427 liederen. Opgedragen aan de Maagd Maria, wisselt de collectie af tussen wonderlijke gedichten en lofliederen. Het geheel, geschreven in de volkstaal Galaico-Portuguees, schommelt tussen hoofse liefdesverhalen en liturgie.  Naast de literaire en muzikale erfenis kan dit werk ook gelezen worden als een kroniek van zowel het culturele als mystieke leven in Europa tijdens de 13e eeuw en onthult het de vage grens tussen sacraal en folklore.Het project speelt met verschillende tijdschalen: geologisch, historisch, muzikaal en menselijk. De voorstelling evolueert voortdurend en bestaat uit een opeenvolging en/of overlapping van repetitieve taken, waarbij de verschillende aspecten van het liedboek aan bod komen: muzikaal, poëtisch, iconografisch, historisch...

********** Français ********** Le dimanche 19 et le lundi 20, les œuvres de l'exposition "The Vessel" prendront littéralement vie lors de deux performances spécifiques au site et largement improvisées. Matt Jackson collaborera avec ‘performance artist’ Ruben Mardulier et le musicien Jean-Jacques Duerinckx et ensemble, ils permettront aux objets et à l'atmosphère de déterminer les histoires qu'ils souhaitent partager. Une marionnette endormie auparavant peut soudainement se réveiller alors qu'un masque flottant apparaît des coins cachés... Les inspirations pour le travail de performance viennent du théâtre physique, de la danse butoh et du théâtre de masques et de marionnettes japonais. ********** Nederlands ********** Op zondag 19 en maandag 20 komen de werken in de tentoonstelling 'The Vessel' letterlijk tot leven in twee locatiegebonden, grotendeels geïmproviseerde performances.
