The first joint exhibition of Hungarian artist, Árpád Forgó and Brussels-based
ceramic artist Abel Jallais takes place at the Front Gallery of Liszt Institute,
Brussels as an official off program of Art Brussels international contemporary
art fair.
At the exhibition, through unusual constellations, Forgó’s delicate shaped
canvas compositions get in dialogue with the monochrome ceramic objects of Abel
Jallais. Despite of working with different medium, their approach and processes
share several similarities. They create non-representational objects, which do
not intend to generate direct associations; the content of the work is its
colour, shape, texture, size and scale.
Both artists developed his own basic forms, from which they build the artworks:
Jallais is using additions, cut-outs and repetition in his “Bonbonne” series;
Forgó is applying different reflection methods, as well as shifting. They create
simple and visually controllable pieces that need to be observed and discovered.
Árpád Forgó works with basic geometric forms and through isometric
transformations; he builds shaped canvas compositions, visualising structures,
shapes, measurements and rhythm, as well as planar and spatial relationships. He
developed shaped canvas modules in order to build block-like or hollow,
symmetrical or asymmetrical compositions. In the recent years, he experiments
intensively with different compound painting processes in order to challenge the
viewer’s perception not only by the structure but also by the material.
Abel Jallais has an attraction to facing unknown objects; therefore, he peals
off the functional territories of the archaic objects and transforms them into a
free form of interpretation. They become a fictional territory again to explore,
offering the opportunity to the passive user to open a new dialogue with the
form. Sighing with the eyes, turning around, manipulating to return to a
primitive form of primitive apprehension. His practice moves in this interstice.
The fictional sense becomes the functional sense.
Both artists work with traditional materials, aiming for industrial perfection,
still keeping the craftsmanship of the process.
Árpád Forgó is a Budapest-based artist. After graduating, he soon started to
focus on geometric abstraction and made paintings with tactile feature. He has
always been interested in the periphery of painting and sculpture. Since 2015,
he creates shaped canvas works and modular compositions. He has exhibited
widely, including solos shows at Anya Tish Gallery in Houston; Schlieder
Contemporary in Frankfurt; Viltin Gallery, Budapest and Rómer Flóris Museum of
Art and History in Győr, Hungary. He has participated in group shows at Ludwig
Museum and Vasarely Museum in Budapest and the Museum Ritter in Waldenbuch,
Germany. Artist residency programs play an important role in the artist’s
career, he was invited to Norway, Australia, Spain, and several times to the
United States. For 2019-2020, he was awarded The Pollock-Krasner Foundation
grant.
Abel Jallais is a French-born ceramic artist living and working in Brussels.
After his studies at the College of Fine Arts in Angers, where he concentrated
on sculpture and drawing, he spent a year in Colombia, where he did an
internship at Campo de Gutierrez artist residency centre, where ceramics played
a major role. He had already been working with clay since his teenage years, and
this experience strengthened his desire to explore this material further. On his
return to Europe, he joined the master’s programme in ceramics at La Cambre
National College of Visual Arts in Brussels, graduating in 2018. Since then, he
has divided his time between his art practice at Espace Triphasé art studio and
his work as a teacher at the Brussels Art Academy and as a teaching assistant at
the ceramics department at La Cambre. His works have been exhibited at numerous
galleries and art spaces in Brussels, including Galerie Cohérent, Musée du
Cinquantenaire, Puls Ceramics Gallery and Espace La Vallée, as well as at
international ceramics platforms in Belgium, The Netherlands and France.

Exposition Résilience au féminin
Description

The ceramist-sculptor Antoine de Vinck lived and worked in Kraainem for 30
years, from 1954 to 1984. He raised the art of ceramics to a level that saw him
recognised as a master both nationally and internationally. The Discover
Kraainem non-profit-making association and the municipality of Kraainem are
joining forces to organise a tribute exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of
his birth.
Antoine de Vinck became a potter and remained one all his life, striving for
perfect mastery of the ceramic technique. His preferred medium was stoneware,
fired in a wood-fired kiln at 1250° - 1280° C. But he was also an authentic
sculptor: animals, objects bearing witness to a sacred presence and inviting
meditation or contemplation and anthropomorphic figures both of great simplicity
and highly expressive. Like the English sculptor Henry Moore, whom he greatly
admired, he drew on civilisations far removed in time and space. He drew
inspiration from tradition and introduced it into modern adventurousness.
More than 70 works by the artist - ceramics, often of imposing size, as well as
drawings - will be on show, from museums and private collections. Some of them
have never before been seen by the public, not even in photographs.

eerder getoond.

Together with architect Sébastien Tripod and graphic & floral designer Deborah
Robbiano, choreographer and researcher Sara Manente is creating an installation
around the fertile ruin, based on fungal imagery. Having previously created
architectural fungi columns, they now aim to imagine an entire theatre in
collaboration with fungi and molds. The theatre turns into a compost in which
process equals products and things are not stable but rather in constant decay
and regrowth. A situation creating space for questions, metaphors and images
around contamination and finality. Is every encounter a form of contamination?
Is every performance a ruin that could bring fruit?Manente invites makers and
thinkers at a number of moments to activate the installation in different ways.
Clara Lévy's and Victor Guaita's concert takes place on 17 May and further
programming will be announced in the spring. Together with Pilar and VUB
Crosstalks, Kaaitheater presents this exhibition as part of A Series of
More-than-human Encounters. This project highlights different ways of being and
alternative forms of knowledge. With the forest, the mountains and the deep sea
as our thinking partners, we invite you to come and discover what is hidden
behind the horizon of human knowledge. Towards a Ruined Theater is also part of
Pilar's KunstxScience programme and VUB Crosstalks. • Sara Manente studied dance
and semiotics before coming to Brussels, where she works as an artist and
researcher. Her projects start from the images and matter of living cultures and
fungi in relation to performing arts. In different formats, she reflects on the
possible contagion/transfer between pedagogy, research, performance and
publication.• Deborah Robbiano is a multidisciplinary artist who works with
found objects, both natural and man-made, to create vegetal sculptures, sets and
installations. In her work, she lets chance encounters and the longevity of
plants guide her process. Each element is abstracted from its original form and
purpose. This shift allows her to celebrate the ephemerality in the many stages
of vegetal transformation.• Sébastien Tripod graduated from the Joint Masters in
Architecture of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western
Switzerland and the Luca School of Arts in Ghent. He collaborates with various
groups for projects in residence, advocating environmental and social ecology.
Closely associated with the knowledge of craftsmanship, interested in
traditional building techniques and the use of low technology, he works as an
independent architect, based in Lausanne since 2018.

Since 2012, Louidgi Beltrame has been conducting research in Peru which has led
him to investigate the Nazca geoglyphs and film the practice of José Levis Picón
Saguma, a curandero (traditional healer or shaman). Through films, photographs,
ink drawings on canvas, and a sculpture produced for his exhibition at La Loge,
the artist explores the liminal figure of the huaquero ('clandestine grave
digger'). By maintaining links with the past, huaquería—or clandestine
excavation—could be seen as a form of resistance to colonisation and a forced,
rational interpretation of the world. Here, traditions, spirits, and ancestors
are kept alive by owing to transactional gestures and the transmission of
knowledge.
The exhibition at La Loge is presented in partnership with le Centre d’art
contemporain d’Ivry — le Crédac.

CIVA is pleased to present the first monographic exhibition honoring the life,
work, and legacy of the Chinese-born Belgian architect Simone Guillissen-Hoa
(1916–96). A proponent of modernist architecture, Guillissen-Hoa was one of the
first women to establish her own architecture firm in Belgium. Her career and
personal life constantly defied the barriers and conventions of gender, race,
and religion.
Her life spanned the major events of the twentieth century, from the early onset
of the Chinese Revolution to the resistance in occupied Belgium and through
postwar reconstruction. In the 1950s, she was a member of the Soroptimist
Association, a women’s-rights advocacy organization, and in the 1970s, she
became involved in the creation of the International Union of Women Architects.
The exhibition both records her architectural projects and, through a wide array
of archival materials, presents her reflections on architecture, her battles and
more broadly, her professional and private life. By delving into
Guillissen-Hoa’s artistic circle, comprised of figures such as Léon Spilliaert,
Alfred Roth, Max Bill, Enrico Castellani, Tapta, Henry and Nele van de Velde,
the exhibition explores the influences and collaborations that shaped her
artistic and intellectual journey.
A newly commissioned film by artists Eva Giolo and Aglaia Konrad is central to
the exhibition, showcasing several of Guillissen-Hoa’s buildings and the
utilization, adaptation, and translation of modernist forms and concepts.
With works by: Max Bill, Enrico Castellani, Pierre Cordier, Jacques Dupuis, Eva
Giolo and Aglaia Konrad, Mayou Iserentant, Alfred Roth, Josine Souweine, Léon
Spilliaert, and Tapta.
An extensive public program on feminism and architecture is being developed in
collaboration with Apolline Vranken (researcher in residence at CIVA, 2023–24).
With talks by Véronique Boone, Beatriz Colomina, Bianca Felicori, Florencia
Fernández Cardoso, Jane Hall, Sol Pérez Martínez, Lucía C. Pérez Moreno,
Léa-Catherine Szacka and many more.
The exhibition marks the occasion of the donation of the Fonds Simone
Guillissen-Hoa to CIVA Collections, Brussels. Curators: Silvia Franceschini and
Yaron Pesztat

eigen architectenbureau oprichtte.
private leven.
Giolo & Aglaia Konrad, Mayou Iserentant, Alfred Roth, Josine Souweine, Léon

“The recent works (2023-2024) presented here explore the many potentialities of
painting, while opening up to other techniques such as drawing, embroidery and
ceramics. Her work is ever-changing and multi-faceted. The artist plays with the
material components of her works, such as the canvas, the frame and the support

gradual conquest towards other dimensions, other potential spaces beyond the

Samantha McEwen arrive à New York à l’âge de 18 ans.
in the East Village, New York, 1978-1983'.

Bellum et Artes explores an early large-scale conflict in Europe through the
warring parties’ strategic employment of the arts as a military propaganda tool
and to accentuate their power. It goes on to demonstrate the impact of works of
art as ‘ambassadors of peace’. The migration of artists and the displacement of
artistic treasures during this period are subjects which can be analysed through
interactive media stations. Furthermore, Bellum et Artes delves into the
struggle for peace, illuminating political schemes and the genesis of legal and
political principles that continue to have relevance today.

periode.

The animal kingdom has long been a source of inspiration for both the visual
arts and jewellery.
True to their philosophy of wearable contemporary jewellery, but also driven by
a sense of humour and the offbeat, Hectare's gallery owners have selected six
artists from near and far to put wildlife in the spotlight. Bestiaire Star
ventures into disturbing, surprising and seductive territory, populated by
hybrid creatures.
The creations of Miriam Arentz, Monika Brugger, Benedikt Fischer, Lore
Langendries, Märta Mattsson and Vivienne Varay play on attraction and repulsion,
without avoiding the question of the materials used: imitated or real,
reinvented or recycled.
The bestiary - an educational picture book - becomes a cabinet of curiosities.
Where the trivial is adorned with the precious, where the object becomes a
story, where the familiar is hijacked and emboldened to the brink of the
strange.
Hectare's Bestiaire Star exhibition is part of the Be.Tour for the second
edition of Brussels Jewellery Week from 25 to 28 April 2024. A festival that
highlights contemporary jewellery and brings together 15 Brussels and
international galleries.

nagemaakt of echt, opnieuw uitgevonden of gerecycled.
internationale galerijen samenbrengt.
