Sometime midway through the 1990s, Piet Maris (frontman with the acclaimed Euro
roots outfit Jaune Toujours) began to make contact with gypsy musicians and,
through their guidance and contacts, to travel regularly to a Roma community in
Slovakia. Through the latter, the ever curious musician learned their gypsy
style of playing. Afterwards, this repertoire was thoroughly reinterpreted by
the musicians of Jaune Toujours (Piet Maris, accordion & vocal - Théophane
Raballand, drums & percussion - Mathieu Verkaeren, double bass - Mattias Laga -
sax soprano & clarinets), who, in their usual fashion, began pushing the music
beyond the boundaries of tradition by adding their own musical flavours to the
sound. At first, the more traditionally-minded gypsies in the band’s audience
frowned in astonishment at these changes but the sound began to catch on with
the younger Roma. The latter’s stamp of approval was, ultimately, given
authority when two young Roma singers - Katia and Milka Pohlodkova - joined the
band for encores on stage and never left… The gypsy incarnation that has
developed from Jaune Toujours is called Mec Yek and Taisa is their latest
recording.
As you’d expect from Mec Yek’s origins, their music contains quite some musical
surprises. Some years after SuperDiverCity they present a new album Taisa,
meaning ‘tomorrow’. It’s the ‘mañana’ from the Roma, you could say. And the
Covid year 2020 will show to be decisive for the sound of the new repertoire.
Mec Yek has opted for a lightweight percussion device, so that it could be
easily manoeuvred for safe rehearsals in a wide variety of locations: outdoors
or in large indoor spaces, with the necessary distance. Most of the recordings
were also done this way, in the concert venue VK in Molenbeek, Brussels. For the
repertoire itself, Katia and Milka went back to their youth in Kosice, Slovakia,
to a demo of songs they made with their brothers. But there are also special
arrangements of traditional Roma songs. Singing is in Romanes, but sometimes
also in Russian and there is even a little bit of Dutch. With a wide range of
styles, from tarantella to ska and island blues. But against all odds : Mec Yek
is a gypsy band without a violin.

Quelque part dans les années 90, Piet Maris, accordéoniste et chanteur de Jaune
Toujours, s’est aventuré dans les milieux tziganes et fit des allers - retours
vers une communauté Rom de Slovaquie. Son accordéon à la main, il y prit des
notes et enregistra les chansons qui font, là-bas, la vie de tous les jours.
C’est ce travail de terrain qui est à la base de Mec Yek : le répertoire a été
fort arrangé par une partie de l’équipe de Jaune Toujours. Sans rester trop près
des traditions et en surprenant la communauté Rom elle-même, Mec Yek
enthousiasme même les plus jeunes d’entre eux. Un beau jour, deux jeunes
chanteuses Romani - Katia et Milka Pohlodkova - montèrent sur scène à la fin
d’un concert d’hiver à Gand, pour ne plus jamais en repartir.
Tout comme l’histoire de Mec Yek, leur musique est pleine de surprises. Après
SuperDiverCity, d’il y a quelques années, il y a le nouvel album Taisa, ce qui
signifie ‘demain’. On pourrait dire : le ‘mañana’ des Roms.
L’année Covid 2020 s’avérera décisive pour le son du nouveau répertoire. Mec Yek
a opté pour un dispositif léger avec des percussions, afin d’être facilement
manœuvrable et de pouvoir répéter en toute sécurité dans les endroits les plus
divers : en plein air ou dans de grands espaces intérieurs, avec la distance
nécessaire.
La plupart des enregistrements ont été faits de cette manière, dans la salle de
concert du VK à Molenbeek, Bruxelles. Pour le répertoire -même, Katia et Milka
sont retournées dans leur jeunesse à Kosice, en Slovaquie, à une démo de
chansons qu’elles ont faite avec leurs frères. Il y a également des arrangements
particuliers de chansons traditionnelles roms.
Avec une large palette musicale, de la tarentelle au ska en passant par le blues
des îles, les chansons sont chantées en romanès, mais parfois, aussi en russe,
il y a même un petit bout en néerlandais.
Mais contre toute attente : Mec Yek est un groupe tzigane sans violon.

Ergens halfweg de jaren '90 raakte Jaune Toujours-frontman Piet Maris in
zigeunermiddens verzeild, waarna hij op- en afreisde naar Roma in Slovakije, om
met zijn accordeon in aanslag opnames en notities te maken van de liederen die
daar het leven van elke dag uitmaken. Dat veldwerk vormde de grondslag van Mec
Yek : met de muzikanten van Jaune Toujours (Piet Maris, accordion & zang -
Théophane Raballand, drum & percussie - Mathieu Verkaeren, contrabas - Mattias
Laga, sopraansax & klarinet) werd het repertoire daarna stevig aangepakt, wars
van om het even welke traditie. Het doet meer dan één zigeunerwenkbrauw fronsen,
maar het werkt evengoed aanstekelijk bij jongere Roma. En zo kwam het ook dat
bij de bisnummers aan het eind van een winters café-optreden in Gent twee jonge
Romani zangeressen - Katia en Milka Pohlodkova - mee het podium opsprongen, om
daarna nooit meer weg te gaan. De zigeunerspin-off van Jaune Toujours heet Mec
Yek en hun nieuwste full album heet Taisa!
Net zoals het muzikale parcours van Mec Yek zit ook hun muziek vol verrassingen.
Na SuperDiverCity van een aantal jaar geleden komen ze nu met een nieuw album
Taisa, wat ‘morgen’ betekent. Het ‘mañana’ van de Roma, zeg maar. En het
Covid-jaar 2020 zal bepalend blijken voor de sound van het nieuwe repertoire.
Mec Yek ging voor een lichte, makkelijk verhuisbare set-up met percussie, zodat
er Corona-veilig kon worden gerepeteerd op de meest uiteenlopende plaatsen: kort
op de bal, in openlucht of in grote binnenruimtes, met de nodige afstand. Het
merendeel van de opnames gebeurden trouwens ook op die manier, in de concertzaal
van de VK in Molenbeek. Voor het repertoire zelf gingen Katia en Milka terug
naar hun jeugd in Kosice in Slovakije, naar een demo met liedjes die ze samen
met hun broers maakten. Maar er zijn ook eigengereide arrangementen van
traditonele Roma-liederen. Er wordt gezongen in het Romanes, maar af en toe ook
in het Russisch en zelfs een klein beetje in het Nederlands. Met een breed
muzikaal palet, van tarantella over ska tot eilandenblues. Maar tegen alle
verwachtingen in: Mec Yek is een zigeunergroep zonder viool.
