Mytilini Rebetiko Ensemble with Maria Seitanidou

When Maria Seitanidou arrived on the island of Lesvos as a newly appointed teacher 16 years ago, she could not imagine how this the place she had decided to live actually was.

It is an island with a rich musical tradition, influenced by the opposite coasts, with revelers but also with a large community of people from other parts of Greece, as well as Turkey. She soon found herself close to notable musicians, such as Solon Lekkas, Nikos Andrikos, Alekos Kafounis, Gianna Maistrelli, Antonis Mylonas, Giorgos Skomboulis, Panagiotis Kaitatzis and many more, who have either settled on the island or spent a short time there. Besides, Nikos Andrikos had then just created the Center for Eastern Music Studies, which attracted musicians from various parts of the world.

In recent years, Nikos Pantaleon came to Mytilini to study and joined this great musical community. With his passion and talent, he was immediately integrated into the musical heart of Mytilini, truly not a minor achievement in the Hellenic world of Eastern music.

Fortunately for them, another great musician, Asteris Varveris, was placed on the remote island a year ago to perform his military service. It didn't take him long to get along with the others.

So, all this explains how the three of them, Maria, Nikos and Asteris, will take us to a on a journey to a nostalgic kafeneion in Lesvos, playing their favorite songs from the interwar period.
