Sheena Patel’s debut novel – ‘a fast, fizzing cherry bomb of a debut’, according
to The Observer – is about desire and obsession and is packed with sharp
observations on gender, race, class and privilege. These are also important
themes for fellow writer and TV presenter Yassmin Abdel-Magied, who will be
writer in residence at Passa Porta in May. The conversation between the two
promises to be a lively exchange.
Sheena Patel was already making a name for herself as one of 4 BROWN GIRLS WHO
WRITE, a collective of talented young writers, when her debut novel "I’m A Fan"
thrust her into the limelight. It made the shortlist of the Dylan Thomas Prize
and the Jhalak Prize, the longlist of the Women’s Prize for Fiction, and it was
voted Discover Book of the Year at the British Book Awards 2023.
The nameless protagonist of "I’m A Fan" is a young woman who spends a lot of her
time on social media, where she closely follows every post and like of ‘the man
I want to be with’, an older artist with whom she has an undefined and unequal
relationship. And then there is ‘the woman I am obsessed with’, a glamorous
influencer who is having an affair with the artist. The protagonist herself has
a devoted lover whom she neglects. The connection between all these
relationships is that each is completely unbalanced and disruptive in its own
way.
In short chapters that are fired at the reader like bullets, we are drawn into
the logic of an obsessive woman who is well aware of everything that is skewed
in the relationships she has or longs for, but who just can’t let go of them.
She knows it is an impossible dream, but she can’t stop pursuing her perfect,
dust-free, shiny, instaproof dreamworld in which she is the centre of adoration
and the epitome of sophistication. The many trenchant insights about social
media, race, gender and privilege she dishes out make her an ambiguous heroine
who is both prey and predator.
The Guardian called Sheena Patel’s debut brilliant, The Observer addictive, The
Washington Post compelling. There is no doubt that the conversation she will
have with Yassmin Abdel-Magied will make for an exciting evening.
about the author
Sheena Patel is a writer and film director, born and raised in North West
London. She is part of the collective 4 BROWN GIRLS WHO WRITE, with whom she
published her first work. She made her debut as a novelist with "I’m A Fan". In
2022 she was chosen as one of the ten best debut novelists by The Observer.

De debuutroman van Sheena Patel, “a fast, fizzing cherry bomb of a debut”
van jonge getalenteerde schrijfsters, en haar debuutroman "I’m A Fan" stuwde
van “the man I want to be with”, een oudere artiest waarmee ze een vage en
The Guardian noemde het debuut van Sheena Patel briljant, The Observer extreem
verslavend, The Washington Post meeslepend.
opleveren.

Fiction, et a été élu Discover Book of the Year aux British Book Awards 2023.

Reading followed by discussion.
Gauthier Gamal invites you to take part in an hour-long reading based on erotic
gay texts he has written. The main aim is to explore our own humanity.
The aim of these self-fictions is to ask us questions about the difficulties,
but also the pleasures, of being in a relationship with another person. Each
story brings out themes which, after reading, we will have the opportunity to
freely exchange our points of view, without judgement. We'll be talking about
love above all, but also homophobia, freedom, suffering, the influence of
virtual relationships, art, and so on.
As we'll be tackling sensitive and even intimate subjects, the event is aimed
exclusively at an adult and queer audience.

Kathrin Röggla is the author of novels, plays, radio plays and essays in which
she mercilessly dissects our crisis-ridden society. The stories in her
collection "Night Programme" are no exception: she shows no pity for her
characters, who wander around, lost, in a globalized, neoliberal world. At Passa
Porta she will discuss the collection with Inge Arteel and her translators, and
she will read from her book (in German, with Dutch translation).
The cracks in the lives and worlds that Kathrin Röggla describes are not there
to let the light in. The mundane takes on a terrifying character in her stories.
She describes a world that consists of conferences, action groups and property
companies, with meetings populated by experts and lobbyists who listen to
speeches that have no consequences and are part of processes that lead nowhere.
We join her characters on planes that are stationary on the tarmac or are
forever hovering over Morocco; we occupy an insurance company’s open-plan
office; we ride in a taxi to the airport of Mumbai; we go to a class reunion; or
we join a chat forum where medical complaints are discussed. Röggla creates a
recognizable yet surprising world in which no one seems at ease. Suspicion
prevails and disorientation and miscommunication fuel unrest. Many characters
struggle with memory gaps while life rumbles on in a senselessly destructive
manner.
And yet Kathrin Röggla’s stories are a joy to read. Her scrupulously clear style
and dry humour make the sense of menace bearable. Her inventive vocabulary also
makes for a unique reading experience. Or does anyone know another writer who
enriches her stories with words like ‘victim competition’, ‘meeting tumult’,
‘alcohol silence’, ‘diagnostic front’, ‘prefab housing-estate monster’, ‘income
biography’, ‘catastrophe expert’ or ‘usufruct minimization’, to name but a few
of her many delightful coinages?
At Passa Porta, Kathrin Röggla will present, together with her translators,
Nachtprogramma, the Dutch translation of her short-story collection
Nachtsendung.
about the author
Austrian author Kathrin Röggla is one of the most important voices in
contemporary German-language literature. In her novels, plays, radio plays and
essays, she sheds an all-consuming light on our crisis-ridden society. Her
idiosyncratic oeuvre has earned her several awards, including the
Alexander-Sacher-Masoch-Preis, Arthur-Schnitzler-Preis, Italo-Svevo-Preis and
Wortmeldungen-Literaturpreis. In 2024 Uitgeverij het balanseer published
Nachtprogramma, the Dutch translation of her short-story collection
Nachtsendung.
about the moderator
Inge Arteel is a professor of German-language literature at Vrije Universiteit
Brussel. Her research focuses on contemporary Austrian literature (mainly
Friederike Mayröcker and Elfriede Jelinek), developments in drama and theatre,
and the radio play. She has translated several of Elfriede Jelinek’s works into
Dutch, most recently Angabe der Person as Persoonsgegevens (Querido, 2023).

in haar verhalen.
slachtoffercompetitie, vergadertumult, alcoholstilte, diagnosefront,
prefabwoonwijkmonster, inkomensbiografie, catastrofe-expert of

Haruki Murakami, Joyce Carol Oates, Don DeLillo, Julius Caesar.
Hanna
Vandenbussche is zesvoudig Belgisch kampioen in verschillende
In 2023 verscheen haar roman Net echt.
columns.
Letteren. Ze studeerde Nederlands en Theater-, Film- en Literatuurwetenschap aan
de Universiteit Antwerpen. In 2021 verscheen haar boek Wat brengt u hier? bij
uitgeverij De Bezige Bij. Ze is een lezer en een loper.

Michael David has been a professional origamist for 8 years, the only one in
Belgium and one of the few European specialists in traditional Japanese folding.
Trained in Japan, he obtained his instructor's certificate from the NOA, Nippon
Origami Association (from 2015 to 2020). Alongside origami, he works as a
lecturer and trainer on traditional folding and popular Japanese media. He is
also the author of the first French-language origami book to pay tribute to the
famous Studio Ghibli, and continues to provide technical coordination for the
Origanime collection at Paris-based publisher Ynnis.
Le Lotus Rouge, Atelier d'Art, which he manages, is a space for experimentation
and reflection on paper arts. In recent years, this dynamic has tended to
highlight the benefits and potential of traditional folding, mainly Japanese
origami, and more sporadically Chinese Zhezhi, in a variety of settings
including schools, academies, museums and associations, as well as federal
institutions (David is currently the only federal trainer on the didactic uses
of folding, as well as the approach to Japanese literature for professionals).
Traditional origami is one of the oldest popular arts in human history still
practiced in its original form and gestures. This discipline, with over 1500
years of history, offers a comprehensive look at its Japanese cultural roots,
but beyond that, it's a fantastic, playful and rewarding approach to the
creative possibilities of paper.
During Lotus Rouge sessions, participants create models emblematic of the
discipline, its gestures and vocabulary. Traditional folding from the Buddhist
tradition or from the Japanese Edo period, the Golden Age of the discipline,
techniques of folded binding or the possibilities of reinforcing reading by
narration in folds: all these discoveries are accompanied and detailed, in a
spirit of kindness...
All materials are supplied, including a range of papers imported from Japan. No
prerequisites required.
