The film was produced through a discursive and community-oriented process, central to which was an ‘exile retreat’ organized by the artist, with participants recruited through an open call. The international group of participants and collaborators convened for the week-long retreat in the south of France to collectively reflect on the relationship between mental health and the experience of exile or seeking asylum.

One of the main historical and political reference points for both the exile retreat and the film was the history of the nearby psychiatric hospital in Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole, Lozère and the radical legacies of Catalan psychiatrist Francesc Tosquelles, to consider exile as a space for transnational solidarity.

Gelare Khoshgozaran is an undisciplinary artist and filmmaker whose work engages with the legacies of imperial violence manifested in war, militarization and borders. They use film and video to construct peripheral narratives that redefine existing constructions of ‘home’ to approach new conceptualizations of belonging.

The Exile Retreat was conceived as an in-person convening and an extension of the Exile Working Group with Ahmed Awadalla, Dita Hashi, samira makki, Zeyo Mann, Olia Sosnovskayai, Juan Urbina and Sarah Zeryab.

The project was commissioned by Delfina Foundation, London, curated by Eliel Jones, and supported by Andy Warhol Foundation | LACE Lightning Fund; the Elephant Trust.

Ce film a été produit à travers un processus discursif et axé sur la communauté, au cœur duquel se trouvait une « retraite de l'exil » organisée par l'artiste, avec des participants recrutés via un appel à candidatures ouvert. Le groupe international de participants et de collaborateurs s'est réuni lors de la retraite d'une semaine dans le sud de la France pour réfléchir collectivement sur la relation entre la santé mentale et l'expérience de l'exil ou de la recherche d'asile.

Un des principaux points de référence historiques et politiques pour la retraite était l'histoire de l'hôpital psychiatrique voisin à Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole, en Lozère, et les héritages radicaux du psychiatre catalan Francesc Tosquelles, pour considérer l'exil comme un espace de solidarité transnationale.

Deze film werd opgenomen tijdens een retraite waarvoor de deelnemers zich hadden aangemeld via een open oproep. Mensen van over de hele wereld kwamen samen in Zuid-Frankrijk om te praten over mentale gezondheid en hun ervaringen met migratie en asiel. 

Een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor zowel de retraite als de film was de geschiedenis van een nabijgelegen psychiatrisch ziekenhuis in Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole, Lozère, en de ideeën van de Catalaanse psychiater Francesc Tosquelles. Hij zag ballingschap als een ruimte waar transnationale solidariteit kon groeien.

Gelare Khoshgozaran is een kunstenaar en filmmaker die verschillende disciplines combineert. Hun werk onderzoekt de effecten van historisch geweld door oorlogen, militarisme en grenzen. Hen maakt gebruik van film en video om verhalen te vertellen die een andere kijk geven op wat 'thuis' betekent en nieuwe ideeën over verbondenheid verkennen.
