Christmas Eve. Staff are just finishing trimming the splendid Christmas tree at the Ekdahl family home in Sweden. The Ekdahls run the local theatre and the young Fanny and Alexander also seem to have been born for the stage. The living room soon fills with the sound of laughter and clinking glasses as well as delicious smells. In the early hours, as the hubbub subsides to naughty giggles and the inebriated guests crawl under the covers (with or without their own partners), the children dream at the spectacle of their magic lantern. Nothing suggests that all warmth will soon disappear from their lives when their father Oscar dies unexpectedly and their mother Emilie soon gets married again, this time to the authoritarian bishop Edvard Vergérus. He is keen to discipline the children and rid Alexander of his vivid fantasies, harshly if necessary …  

This winter, Ingmar Bergman’s semi-autobiographical film Fanny och Alexander (1982) will come to life on the opera stage, in a creation by composer Mikael Karlsson and librettist Royce Vavrek. A grandiose family chronicle demands grandiose means. For her debut at La Monnaie, conductor Ariane Matiakh will turn her attention to a score that combines the acoustic sound of a symphony orchestra with ingenious surround electronics, commanding a cast of fourteen soloists, among whom none other than Thomas Hampson and Anne Sofie von Otter. Director Ivo van Hove, who is intimately familiar with Bergman’s work, will dig deep into the soul of his characters and, together with scenographer Jan Versweyveld, will create scenes that gradually unfold into a spectral hall of mirrors. A fantasy world that stubbornly goes against harsh reality – and may ultimately overcome it.

Le soir de Noël, en Suède. Chez les Ekdahl, le personnel de maison finit de décorer le somptueux sapin. Les Ekdahl dirigent le théâtre local, et les petits-enfants d’Helena, Fanny et Alexander, semblent eux aussi nés pour la scène. Bien vite, le salon s’emplit de bavardages, du tintement des verres et d’odeurs exquises. Au petit matin, les rumeurs de la fête font place aux gloussements grivois, et les invités ivres se glissent sous les draps (pas forcément avec leur partenaire), tandis que les enfants rêvent devant le spectacle de leur lanterne magique. Rien ne laisse supposer que toute chaleur désertera bientôt leur existence. Mais leur père, Oscar, décède brusquement et leur mère, Emilie, se remarie avec l’autoritaire évêque Edvard Vergérus, qui s’emploie à discipliner les enfants et à chasser les chimères vivaces d’Alexander, au besoin en levant la main sur lui...  

Fanny och Alexander (1982), film semi-autobiographique d’Ingmar Bergman, fait cette année ses débuts à l’opéra dans une création du compositeur Mikael Karlsson et du librettiste Royce Vavrek. Une chronique familiale de cette ampleur nécessitait des moyens d’envergure. Pour ses débuts à la Monnaie, la cheffe d’orchestre Ariane Matiakh se frotte à une partition qui allie musique symphonique et sonorités électroniques « surround » ingénieuses. Elle dirige pour l’occasion une distribution composée de quatorze solistes, parmi lesquels Thomas Hampson et Anne Sofie von Otter. Fin connaisseur de l’œuvre de Bergman, le metteur en scène Ivo van Hove plonge au plus profond de l’âme de ses personnages pour créer, avec le scénographe Jan Versweyveld, des tableaux qui se transforment peu à peu en un effrayant palais des glaces, un monde imaginaire qui conteste la dure réalité – et pourrait finir par l’emporter.

Kerstavond. Bij de Zweedse familie Ekdahl legt het personeel de laatste hand aan de luisterrijke kerstboom. De Ekdahls leiden het lokale theater en ook de kleine Fanny en Alexander lijken geboren voor het toneel. Al snel vult de woonkamer zich met vrolijk geschater, klinkende glazen en verrukkelijke geuren. Wanneer in de vroege uurtjes het feestgedruis verstilt tot ondeugend gegiechel en de beschonken gasten (al dan niet met hun eigen partner) tussen de lakens kruipen, dromen de kinderen weg bij het schouwspel van hun toverlantaarn. Niets doet vermoeden dat alle warmte weldra uit hun leven zal verdwijnen, wanneer hun vader Oscar onverwacht overlijdt en hun moeder Emilie hertrouwt met de autoritaire bisschop Edvard Vergérus. Die is erop gebrand om de kinderen te disciplineren en Alexanders levendige fantasieën uit te drijven, indien nodig hardhandig...

Dit eindejaar komt Ingmar Bergmans semi-autobiografische film Fanny och Alexander (1982) tot leven op het operatoneel, in een creatie van componist Mikael Karlsson en librettist Royce Vavrek. Een grootse familiekroniek verlangt grootse middelen. Dirigente Ariane Matiakh buigt zich bij haar Muntdebuut over een partituur die de akoestische klank van een symfonieorkest combineert met ingenieuze surround electronics en voert een cast van veertien solisten aan, waaronder niemand minder dan Thomas Hampson en Anne Sofie von Otter. Regisseur Ivo van Hove, intiem vertrouwd met het œuvre van Bergman, graaft diep in de ziel van zijn personages en creëert samen met scenograaf Jan Versweyveld toneelbeelden die zich gaandeweg ontvouwen tot een spookachtig spiegelpaleis. Een fantasiewereld die de harde realiteit halsstarrig tegenspreekt – en uiteindelijk misschien overwint.
