Guided tour of Brussels’ Palace of Justice

Description

When the building was constructed, the intention was clear: everything was done to impress, both from the outside and the inside. The courthouse is a symbolic place with a long history, built on the former "Mont des Potences" (Gallows Hill), where convicts were executed in the Middle Ages. Legend has it that in the 16th century, the famous doctor Vesalius used to steal corpses there at night to study the human body. It is one of Brussels' most impressive monuments and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the lower part of the city. It was designed by Joseph Poelaert, who won the international competition organised by the Belgian government in 1860. The palace was inaugurated on 15 October 1883, four years after his death. Adored by some, decried by others, this gigantic structure covers 40,000m² of usable space. Its cupola rises to a height of 100m and it contains more than 250 rooms, including 27 impressive courtrooms! A visit to the courthouse gives you the opportunity to learn more about the building's colourful history, its architecture, the works of art it contains and indeed the Belgian judicial system. So what are you waiting for? Go check it out!
