In
bezoeken. Pas in november 1954 was het gehele museum klaar en vond de officiële
opening plaats.
Spoorwegmuseum.

TextielMuseum
Musée du textile, Goirkestraat 96, Tilburg, Brabant-Septentrional 5046 GN, Pays-Bas
Description

Of nemen onze
Join us at 1646 for an exhibition that examines the hidden powers that rule many
parts of our lives.
Financial power is a concept that becomes more intangible with each attempt to
understand it, often hiding itself in tall buildings. Through extensive research
on the development of global capitalism, stock markets and big corporations,
artist/filmmaker Bob Demper tries to understand the impact it has on our
existence. Demper looks at how the risk taken by the corporate world is almost
always a public risk, and how this relentless pursuit of growth has resulted in
polarisation, confusion and a lack of understanding of what’s governing our
everyday life.
At 1646, the audience can walk through carefully crafted film sets. Spaces that
make us feel the tension between these opaque financial worlds and our private
space, where we find ourselves on the edge of dreams and reality.
photo.

Queens Brussels is delighted to announce the prolongation of the exhibition
Iconostasis featuring a duo of visual artists, Gianluca Cosci and Sébastien
Forthomme. The exhibition presents a selection of their most recent works,
highlighting both the affinities and disparities of the artists’ individual
practices. The exhibition is designed as a dialogue between two unique artistic
personalities, presenting an enriching visual exchange.
The title, Iconostasis, refers to the Eastern Christian tradition in Byzantine
churches of a solid screen of stone, wood, or metal, usually separating the
sanctuary from the nave. The iconostasis had originally been some sort of simple
partition between the altar and the congregation. It then became a row of
columns, and the spaces between them were eventually filled with icons.
Quite surprisingly we do not find any other reference to Christianity or faith
in general in this exhibition. The silent power conveyed by the artworks evokes
a feeling of being mesmerized each in its own individual manner, reminiscent of
Colour Field paintings. Through their elegiac tones, the artworks draw viewers
into their own sphere, inviting closer encounters with their physicality which
become both a boundary and a contact point between immanence and the sublime. In
that respect the artists’ creations function as a sort of laic iconostases that
project us into introspective and existential meditations.
In his practice Gianluca Cosci investigates the different interpretations of
iconoclasm concerning the concept of visual obliteration using existing artworks
as palimpsests and creating new pieces through painting and photography. In his
work the artist examines the auratic potency of images when subjected to
iconoclastic interventions. Cosci’s eclectic oeuvre converges towards the
dichotomy between the visible and invisible, perception and imagination. In his
investigations the artist aims to convey the concept of 'hidden' by partially
veiling images and denying visions. Ultimately, Gianluca Cosci examines the
enigma of images and how their allure can be amplified when they are concealed
or erased: visual negation can eventually serve as a means for the viewer to
adhere to the Duchampian principle of actively engaging in the interpretation
and finalisation of the artwork, as the crucial and supreme contribution to the
artistic experience.
In the photographic works of Sébastien Forthomme exists a comparable sensibility
towards the negation of the visible in the form of abstract compositions and
blurred images. His photographs suggest mystical dimensions through an aesthetic
quest that start from the visible only to ascend towards a mesmerising inner
voyage made of sinuous shapes and sensuous colours. Forthomme’s practice can be
identified with a journey towards the absolute that could indeed have affinities
to that material separation made of icons that prevents optical vision in favour
of another, more transcendent one. ‘It is not doubt but certainty that drives us
mad', said Nietzsche. Our society is a knowledge society based on scientific
laws dating back to Galileo. Anything that escapes these formalised laws is
beyond our horizon. The artist attempts to set this knowledge aside and invoke a
more fundamental and innate perception.
Biography
Gianluca Cosci (1970, Italy) completed a BA in painting at the Accademia di
Belle Arti, Bologna. Between 1999 and 2011 he lived and worked in London where
he obtained Master degrees in fine art at Chelsea College of Art and in art and
design at the Institute of Education, University of London. In 2011 he moved to
Brussels where he currently lives and works. He is expected to defend his Ph.D.
in the arts at LUCA School of Art/KU Leuven University in December 2023 titled
“The Denied Image: Art Interventions Between Iconoclasm and Institutional
Critique”.
Sébastien Forthomme (1976, Belgium) studied at the Agnès Varda School of
Photography in Brussels. He was a photographer for the Opéra Royal de la Monnaie
between 2008 and 2015. He then embarked on an artistic research and exhibited in
Brussels and Amsterdam, among other places. His work expresses his research into
doubt, the limits of perception and knowledge, and the human-nature 'continuum'.

The first joint exhibition of Hungarian artist, Árpád Forgó and Brussels-based
ceramic artist Abel Jallais takes place at the Front Gallery of Liszt Institute,
Brussels as an official off program of Art Brussels international contemporary
art fair.
At the exhibition, through unusual constellations, Forgó’s delicate shaped
canvas compositions get in dialogue with the monochrome ceramic objects of Abel
Jallais. Despite of working with different medium, their approach and processes
share several similarities. They create non-representational objects, which do
not intend to generate direct associations; the content of the work is its
colour, shape, texture, size and scale.
Both artists developed his own basic forms, from which they build the artworks:
Jallais is using additions, cut-outs and repetition in his “Bonbonne” series;
Forgó is applying different reflection methods, as well as shifting. They create
simple and visually controllable pieces that need to be observed and discovered.
Árpád Forgó works with basic geometric forms and through isometric
transformations; he builds shaped canvas compositions, visualising structures,
shapes, measurements and rhythm, as well as planar and spatial relationships. He
developed shaped canvas modules in order to build block-like or hollow,
symmetrical or asymmetrical compositions. In the recent years, he experiments
intensively with different compound painting processes in order to challenge the
viewer’s perception not only by the structure but also by the material.
Abel Jallais has an attraction to facing unknown objects; therefore, he peals
off the functional territories of the archaic objects and transforms them into a
free form of interpretation. They become a fictional territory again to explore,
offering the opportunity to the passive user to open a new dialogue with the
form. Sighing with the eyes, turning around, manipulating to return to a
primitive form of primitive apprehension. His practice moves in this interstice.
The fictional sense becomes the functional sense.
Both artists work with traditional materials, aiming for industrial perfection,
still keeping the craftsmanship of the process.
Árpád Forgó is a Budapest-based artist. After graduating, he soon started to
focus on geometric abstraction and made paintings with tactile feature. He has
always been interested in the periphery of painting and sculpture. Since 2015,
he creates shaped canvas works and modular compositions. He has exhibited
widely, including solos shows at Anya Tish Gallery in Houston; Schlieder
Contemporary in Frankfurt; Viltin Gallery, Budapest and Rómer Flóris Museum of
Art and History in Győr, Hungary. He has participated in group shows at Ludwig
Museum and Vasarely Museum in Budapest and the Museum Ritter in Waldenbuch,
Germany. Artist residency programs play an important role in the artist’s
career, he was invited to Norway, Australia, Spain, and several times to the
United States. For 2019-2020, he was awarded The Pollock-Krasner Foundation
grant.
Abel Jallais is a French-born ceramic artist living and working in Brussels.
After his studies at the College of Fine Arts in Angers, where he concentrated
on sculpture and drawing, he spent a year in Colombia, where he did an
internship at Campo de Gutierrez artist residency centre, where ceramics played
a major role. He had already been working with clay since his teenage years, and
this experience strengthened his desire to explore this material further. On his
return to Europe, he joined the master’s programme in ceramics at La Cambre
National College of Visual Arts in Brussels, graduating in 2018. Since then, he
has divided his time between his art practice at Espace Triphasé art studio and
his work as a teacher at the Brussels Art Academy and as a teaching assistant at
the ceramics department at La Cambre. His works have been exhibited at numerous
galleries and art spaces in Brussels, including Galerie Cohérent, Musée du
Cinquantenaire, Puls Ceramics Gallery and Espace La Vallée, as well as at
international ceramics platforms in Belgium, The Netherlands and France.
