Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis / Belgian National Orchestra

The incomparable trumpet player and composer Wynton Marsalis originally set his sights on a career in classical music. After a tour with Art Blakey’s band, Marsalis opted for jazz and has since risen to world fame with his virtuoso playing. Nevertheless, Marsalis still regularly writes classical work. At Bozar, the Belgian National Orchestra combined with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra – the ultimate contemporary big band, brought to fame by Marsalis – will perform two of his works. In his Fourth Symphony "The Jungle", Marsalis captures the energy of New York in a vibrant composition and attempts to grasp the maelstrom of modern life. His virtuoso, richly tinted Violin Concerto in D Major, offers an intriguing mixture of New Orleans jazz accents and recollections of Irish and Scottish ballads. The Belgian première of the concert at Bozar is in the competent hands of Nicola Benedetti, for whom the work was written. Marsalis himself also makes an appearance on stage.
Wynton Marsalis honours Bozar with his presence on two occasions. On 29 March, he takes to the stage with his big band, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, for a concert in the purest tradition of American jazz. Aspirant initialement à une carrière dans la musique classique, le trompettiste et compositeur hors pair Wynton Marsalis opte pour le jazz après une tournée avec le groupe d'Art Blakey. Il a depuis acquis une renommée mondiale grâce à son jeu virtuose. Néanmoins, Marsalis écrit aussi régulièrement des œuvres classiques. À Bozar, le Belgian National Orchestra et le Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (le big band contemporain par excellence, rendu célèbre par Marsalis lui-même) interpréteront deux de ses œuvres. Dans sa Quatrième symphonie "The Jungle", Marsalis capture l'énergie de New York dans une composition vibrante et tente de comprendre le maelström de la vie moderne. Le Concerto pour violon en ré majeur, virtuose et richement coloré, consiste d'un mélange intrigant d'accents de jazz de la Nouvelle-Orléans et de souvenirs de ballades irlandaises et écossaises. La pièce est interprété pour la première fois en Belgique à Bozar, par l’archet expert de Nicola Benedetti, son dédicataire. Marsalis lui-même sera aussi sur scène.

De weergaloze trompettist en componist Wynton Marsalis ambieerde aanvankelijk een carrière in de klassieke muziek. Na een tournee met Art Blakeys band koos Marsalis voor de jazz en verwierf sindsdien wereldfaam met zijn virtuoze spel. Niettemin schrijft Marsalis nog regelmatig klassiek werk. In Bozar brengen het Belgian National Orchestra én het Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra - de ultieme hedendaagse bigband, grootgemaakt door Marsalis – twee van zijn stukken. In zijn Vierde symfonie “The Jungle” vat Marsalis de energie van New York in een bruisende compositie en geeft hij gestalte aan de maalstroom van het moderne leven. Marsalis’ virtuoze en rijkgekleurde Vioolconcerto in D biedt een intrigerende mix van New Orleanse jazzaccenten en herinneringen aan Ierse en Schotse ballades. Het concerto krijgt zijn Belgische première in Bozar in de bekwame handen van Nicola Benedetti, voor wie het werk is geschreven. En ook Marsalis zelf maakt zijn opwachting op het podium.
Wynton Marsalis vereert Bozar tweemaal met zijn aanwezigheid. Op 29 maart staat hij op het podium met zijn big band, het Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, voor een concert in de puurste traditie van de Amerikaanse jazz. Na Marsalis' The Democracy! Suite hoor je het volledige orkest hun swing loslaten.
