Marlene Schäfers est professeure associée au Département d’anthropologie culturelle de l’Université d’Utrecht aux Pays-Bas. Ses recherches portent sur l’impact de la violence d’État sur les vies intimes et genrées, la politique de la voix et de la mémoire, et l’imagination du vivant et après la mort. Elle est anthropologue spécialiste des régions kurdes et de la Turquie moderne. Sa première monographie,
Voices that Matter : Kurdish Women at the Limits of Representation in Contemporary Turkey, a été publiée aux presses de l’Université de Chicago en 2023 et a remporté le prix du livre 2024 de l’Association des études ottomanes et turques. Le livre porte sur la lutte des femmes kurdes et leurs voix dans la Turquie contemporaine, proposant une analyse des raisons et des conséquences de
la politique libérale ayant incité les groupes minoritaires à élever la voix. Elle a également publié une biographie en kurde et en turc d’un chanteur kurde, Dengbêj Gazîn, intitulée Ez Gazîn Im : Jineke Dengbêj (co-écrite avec Ergun Sibel Yücel, Aram Publishers, 2021). Depuis 2022, elle est rédactrice en chef de la Revue d’études kurdes. Avec l’Orient-Institut d’Istanbul, elle fait partie d’un projet de numérisation et de mise en libre accès d’archives de cassettes contenant des voix de chanteuses kurdes.

Biography

Marlene Schäfers is assistant professor at the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Her research focuses on the impact of state violence on intimate and gendered lives, the politics of voice and memory, and the imaginations of life and the afterlife. She specialises in the anthropology of the Kurdish regions and modern Türkiye. Her first monograph, Voices that Matter: Kurdish Women at the Limits of Representation in Contemporary Turkey was published with the University of Chicago Press in 2023 and won the 2024 Book Award of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association. The book investigates Kurdish women’s struggle for a voice in contemporary Türkiye, advancing a fine-grained analysis of how and with what consequences
liberal politics incite minoritarian subjects to raise their voices. She has also published a biography in Kurdish and Turkish of a Kurdish singer, Dengbêj Gazîn, entitled Ez Gazîn Im: Jineke Dengbêj (co-authored with Ergun Sibel Yücel, Aram Publishers, 2021). Since 2022, she has been the managing editor of the Kurdish Studies Journal. Together with the Orient-Institut Istanbul, she is currently
involved in a project to digitise and make open access an archive of cassette tapes containing Kurdish women singers’ voices.
