Sophie Taeuber-Arp by Christoph Kühn

Sophie Taeuber-Arp is a posthumous attempt to rehabilitate an artist who is too little known and whose work has been overshadowed by that of her husband, the sculptor Jean Arp. Many witnesses have come forward to talk about this radiant yet discreet woman who ‘served tea’ and did not talk about her research and work, all in the tradition of the Bauhaus and abstraction, always leaving her husband in the limelight. The film is constructed like a well-informed report, which, through extensive interviews with family members, former students and other artist as well as a wealth of documentation and colourful artworks, gives this hyper-talented artist the place she deserves and never had.
Christoph Kühn (1952) is a screenwriter, director and cinematographer. In 1975-79 he attends the HFF (Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film) in Munich. Since 1983 works as an independent film director with numerous documentaries to his name.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp est une tentative posthume de réhabilitation d’une artiste trop peu connue et dont l’œuvre a été éclipsée par celle de son mari, le sculpteur Jean Arp. De nombreux témoins se sont exprimés au sujet de cette femme rayonnante, mais discrète qui « servait le thé » et ne parlait ni de ses recherches ni de ses travaux, tous dans la tradition du Bauhaus et de l’abstraction, laissant toujours son mari sous les feux de la rampe. Le film est construit comme un reportage bien documenté grâce à des entretiens approfondis avec des membres de la famille, d’anciens élèves et d’autres artistes, ainsi qu’à une riche documentation et à des œuvres d’art colorées. Il donne à cette artiste hyper-talentueuse la place qu’elle mérite et qu’elle n’a jamais eue.
Christoph Kühn (1952) est scénariste, réalisateur et directeur de la photographie. En 1975-79, il suit des cours à la HFF (Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film) à Munich. Depuis 1983, il travaille comme réalisateur indépendant et a signé de nombreux documentaires.

Het werk van Sophie Taeuber-Arp wordt vaak overschaduwd door dat van haar man Hans Arp. De film Sophie Taeuber-Arp stelt de kunstenares postuum voor aan het grote publiek. Ze was een stralende maar discrete vrouw, die ‘thee serveerde’ en nauwelijks sprak over haar onderzoek en werk in de traditie van Bauhaus en abstracte kunst. Liever liet ze haar man in de schijnwerpers staan. De film is opgebouwd als een goed gestoffeerde reportage. Aan de hand van diepgaande interviews met familieleden, voormalige leerlingen en andere kunstenaars krijgt deze hypergetalenteerde kunstenares de aandacht die ze verdient. De schat aan documentatie en kleurrijke kunstwerken rechtvaardigen de keuze van Kühn. 
Christoph Kühn (°1952) is scenarioschrijver, regisseur en cinematograaf. Tussen 1975 en 1979 studeerde hij aan de HFF (Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film) in München. Kühn werkt sinds 1983 als onafhankelijk filmregisseur en heeft al talloze documentaires op zijn naam staan.
