Synopsis:

After the takeover of Kabul by the Taliban, Raha and Marwa, two young Afghan women, record voice notes to tell the story of their daily lives. Raha has chosen to stay in Kabul; she is confronted with the violence of the regime. Marwa has left and finds herself locked up in a refugee camp in Abu Dhabi, where she waits to be welcomed somewhere in the world. The film is based on the hundreds of voice notes they exchanged with journalist Caroline Gillet in the months that followed.

Director's Biography:

Caroline Gillet was born in Brussels and has been producing documentary series for France Inter for the past fifteen years. Her podcast “Inside Kabul”, which gathers the vocal notes sent by two young Afghan women since the fall of Kabul, has just received the ‘Contemporary writing’ mention at the Longueurs d’ondes Prize. For the past year, Caroline Gillet has also been collecting the stories of Ukrainians confronted with war for the column ‘Notes vocales d’Ukraine’ broadcast in the program ‘Un jour dans le monde’ on France Inter.

Graduate from the Orleans Institute of Visual Arts in 1991, Denis Walgenwitz has worked as an assistant director, notably for Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi’s “Persepolis” (2007). He participated in the development and production of feature films such as “Moi, moche et méchant” (2009), “Le Congrès” (2013) by Ari Folman, “La Tortue Rouge” (2016) by Michael Dudok de Wit, or “Ma Vie de Courgette” (2015) by Claude Barras. He has also directed several short films, such as “La Mort, Père et fils” (2017), co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud, or “Un Amour de télés” (2007).

Synopsis :

Après la prise de Kaboul par les talibans, Raha et Marwa, deux jeunes Afghanes, enregistrent des notes vocales pour raconter leur quotidien. Raha a choisi de rester à Kaboul ; elle est confrontée à la violence du régime. Marwa est partie et se retrouve enfermée dans un camp de réfugiés à Abu Dhabi, où elle attend d’être accueillie quelque part dans le monde. Le film est basé sur les centaines de notes vocales qu’elles ont échangées avec la journaliste Caroline Gillet dans les mois qui ont suivi.

Biographie des réalisateurs :

Caroline Gillet est née à Bruxelles et produit depuis quinze ans des séries documentaires pour France Inter. Son podcast « Inside Kabul », qui rassemble les notes vocales envoyées par deux jeunes femmes afghanes depuis la chute de Kaboul, vient de recevoir la mention « Écriture contemporaine » du Prix Longueurs d’ondes. Depuis un an, Caroline Gillet recueille également les récits d’Ukrainiens confrontés à la guerre pour la rubrique « Notes vocales d’Ukraine » diffusée dans l’émission « Un jour dans le monde » sur France Inter.

Diplômé de l’Institut des arts visuels d’Orléans en 1991, Denis Walgenwitz a travaillé comme assistant réalisateur, notamment pour « Persepolis » (2007) de Vincent Paronnaud et Marjane Satrapi. Il a participé au développement et à la production de longs métrages tels que « Moi, moche et méchant » (2009), « Le Congrès » (2013) d’Ari Folman, « La Tortue Rouge » (2016) de Michael Dudok de Wit, ou encore « Ma Vie de Courgette » (2015) de Claude Barras. Il a également réalisé plusieurs courts-métrages, comme « La Mort, Père et fils » (2017), coréalisé avec Vincent Paronnaud, ou « Un Amour de télés » (2007).
