BEPAPER talks - Belgian historic avant-garde works on paper

With an eye toward new generations of art historians, curators and researchers, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium propose a series of three talks on the Belgian avant-garde, the specificities of museum work and the role that paper plays within these contexts. This event will be concluding the research project “BePaper - Belgian Art on Paper in a European Perspective. 1918-1950” that started in 2020.

This conference aims to understand why and how a wide variety of Belgian classic avant-garde artists turned to paper during the interwar period. The use of paper served different aesthetic, artistic and practical reasons that will be showcased with the help of different case studies from the Royal Museum’s’ collection.



Sarah Eycken is a PhD student at the University of Leuven, where she prepares a thesis on Belgian historic avant-garde works on paper in close collaboration with the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. She holds master’s degrees in Art History and Western Literature and has a strong interest in the relationship between word and image, magazine and print culture, and, of course, artistic experimentation employing paper.

A l'attention des nouvelles générations d'historiens de l'art, de conservateurs et de chercheurs, les Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique proposent une série de trois conférences sur l'avant-garde belge, les spécificités du travail muséal et le rôle que joue le papier dans ces contextes. Cet événement clôturera le projet de recherche «BePaper – Belgian Art on Paper in a European Perspective. 1918-1950»qui a débuté en 2020.

Cette conférence vise à comprendre pourquoi et comment une grande variété d'artistes belges de l'avant-garde classique se sont tournés vers le papier pendant l'entre-deux-guerres. L'utilisation du papier a servi différentes raisons esthétiques, artistiques et pratiques qui seront mises en évidence à l'aide de différentes études de cas tirées de la collection des Musées royaux.



Sarah Eyckenest doctorante à l'Université de Leuven, où elle prépare une thèse sur les œuvres sur papier de l'avant-garde historique belge, en étroite collaboration avec les Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. Elle est titulaire d'une maîtrise en histoire de l'art et en littérature occidentale et s'intéresse de près à la relation entre le mot et l'image, à la culture des magazines et de l'imprimé et, bien sûr, à l'expérimentation artistique sur papier.

De Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België stelt graag een reeks van drie lezing voor aan de nieuwe generaties kunsthistorici, curatoren en onderzoekers over de Belgische avant-garde, de specificiteiten van werken met papier in museale context, en de rol die papier speelde binnen de Belgisch avant-garde. Dit evenement is de feestelijke afsluiting van het onderzoeksproject ''BePaper – Belgian Art on Paper in a European Perspective. 1918-1950" dat in 2020 van start ging.

Tijdens deze lezing wordt ingegaan op de vragen waarom en hoe een grote verscheidenheid aan Belgische klassieke avant-gardekunstenaars zich tijdens het interbellum tot papier wendden. Het gebruik van papier diende verschillende esthetische, artistieke en praktische redenen die zullen worden belicht aan de hand van verschillende case studies uit de collectie van de Koninklijke Musea.



Sarah Eycken is doctoraatsstudente aan de Katholiek Universiteit Leuven, waar ze een proefschrift voorbereidt over Belgische historische avant-garde werken op papier in nauwe samenwerking met de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België. Ze heeft een master in Kunstwetenschappen en Westerse Literatuur en heeft een sterke interesse in de relatie tussen woord en beeld, tijdschrift- en drukcultuur, en natuurlijk artistieke experimenten met papier.
