This was a Total Sell Out at the Edinburgh Fringe. Emmanuel presents a whistle
stop tour through all of his jobs that have led him to become one of the hottest
stand-up comics on the circuit in brand new show, Emmanuel Sonubi: Curriculum
Vitae.
This brand-new show takes us through a hilarious and heartfelt story that
explores all the jobs that Emmanuel has had before becoming a comedian and how
those experiences helped shape his comedic voice. Recently seen on QI, Alan
Davies As Yet Untitled, Apprentice 'You're Fired’ and headlined Live at the
Apollo. Both Emmanuel’s 2022 and 2023 shows Emancipated and Curriculum Viate
sold out and was a Fringe smash-hit, and this is a show not to miss.
The show takes the audience on a hilarious and sometimes poignant journey
through a variety of jobs and industries many of which, he was wildly
unqualified to do. From working in IT to the doors of London's nightlife, all
this while building up an impressive list of Musical Theatre credit.
Emmanuel said today, “I am looking forward to getting out to Rotterdam, I
promise you’re going to love the show as much as I do performing it. Edinburgh
was an absolute blast and I’m humbled to have been nominated twice in a row for
the biggest prize in comedy and I cannot wait to share this show with you.”
Very special guest : Richard Ruben

In death you will find fulfilment, in your neighbour perhaps the truth behind
love. Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs
– posthumous gems by two of the greatest song composers if the twentieth century
– sing, each in their own way, about the big questions of life.
In 1948, when the rubble of the world conflagration was still smouldering,
Strauss set to music three poems by Hermann Hesse and one by Joseph von
Eichendorff for his swan song. These are lieder that, with their dreamy
lyricism, find comfort in the irrevocable cyclicity of nature and reassure us:
what if death brings peace?
The melancholy nature of Strauss’s late romanticism is at odds with the wit and
charm of Benjamin Britten’s pre-war Cabaret Songs. Based on poems by his good
friend W.H. Auden, ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ and
‘Calypso’ reveal, with their spirited, jazzy undertones, a very different facet
of the composer whose opera The Turn of the Screw we are also performing this
season.
After unforgettable appearances in Les Huguenots and Bastarda, among others,
soprano Lenneke Ruiten will now sing for the first time a recital on our stage.
Accompanied at the piano by Thom Janssen, she will present a richly filled
evening full of contrasts that will immerse you completely in the poetry of
song.

« Tell
me the Truth About Love », « Funeral Blues », « Johnny » et « Calypso », toutes

Benjamin Brittens vooroorlogse Cabaret Songs. ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’,
The Turn of the Screw
brengen.

choreography. Born in Algeria and now living in France, she translates diverse
influences and dance traditions into addictive kinetic scores which cannot leave
you unmoved. This is dance in its purest form, which needs to be experienced
rather than understood. Two core research principles in Belaza’s body of work
are ‘the circle’ and ‘rhythm’. In previous creations presented at the festival,
Le Cercle (2019) and L’Onde (2021), she uncovered these research principles
separately with determination and depth. Now they come together for the first
time: on the one hand, the power of the circle in space, tracing its orbit
around an unchanging centre, as if organising the disorder of disparate lives;
on the other, the rhythm digging into time, lifting up bodies to grant them a
dazzling freedom. Combined, the confrontation becomes a ritual practice opening
up to a perpetual motion, a loophole to infinity. In this unique experience, the
audience surrounds the dancers to contain their incredible energy. Not to be
missed!

With his first solo exhibition in Belgium, Hsu Che-Yu presents a series of
objects and works that together form an original landscape on the idea of
mourning. The impressive triptych Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises takes
centre stage, consisting of three of his latest video works and as many stories
about loss. Zoo Hypothesis recounts the animal-to-animal mourning ritual created
by zookeepers who trained animals to kneel and perform gestures of worship to
commemorate animals that have died due to warfare. In Blank Photograph, the
memories of a terrorist bomber are juxtaposed with his brother's suicide in the
family home, presenting death as a tension between the individual and the
collective. Finally, Gray Room is a tribute to the artist's deceased
grandmother, recalling the experience of bodily perception in her house while
contemplating death and memory from a material perspective. To produce his video
works, Che-Yu works with the 3D scanning technique also used by the Taiwanese
police to collect forensic evidence, identify fragmented or decomposing bodies
and examine crime scenes. Multiple exercises in mourning that explore the
representations, constructions and alienations of memory and death as an
intimate event. A breathtaking experience.

l’impressionnant triptyque Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises.

rouw. Het indrukwekkende drieluik Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises staat
adembenemende ervaring.

Can we understand someone’s oeuvre without knowing her personal life? At the
invitation of the festival, theatre makers Carolina Bianchi – who caused a
furore at last year’s Festival d’Avignon – and Carolina Mendonça enter into
conversation with filmmaker and writer Chantal Akerman. Why are we so obsessed
with finding out the truth about someone? In Ma mère rit, Akerman wrote: “I
don’t have a life, I’ve never learned how to make one for myself”. According to
Bianchi and Mendonça, the personal lives of female artists are often scrutinised
to the point of eclipsing their work. Now, they propose a dialogue with Akerman,
about sexuality, heredity and the autobiographical writing process. With this
venture, Bianchi and Mendonça continue their investigation on women artists of
previous generations and on an expanded form of motherhood, two crucial concepts
in their artistic path. They bring together fragments of Ma mère rit – in which
Akerman wrote her memoirs while caring for her ailing mother – and references to
Les Rendez-vous d’Anna, a movie in which she spent a night with her mother in a
hotel close to the Gare du Midi. A layered reading performance inspired by
Akerman’s mood and language, in an abandoned cinema, some streets away from that
very hotel room.
