Nemø ensemble

For centuries, composers have been inspired by musicians with phenomenal abilities, resulting in technical or aesthetic breakthroughs. Cathy Berberian became the ‘Muse of Darmstadt’ and inspired great names of the twentieth century, including her husband Luciano Berio. Berberian not only significantly expanded the range of vocal techniques in classical music, but also contributed to the emancipation of the voice in the experimental genre. In the programme ‘O Cathy’, Nemø pays tribute to the musician by combining her compositions with works written for her, in which the role of performer is equal to that of composer. Interpretation, arrangement and composition push the boundaries in this new production by this exciting collective.

Les compositeur·ices de l’histoire se sont parfois laissé inspirer par des musicien·nes aux capacités phénoménales, donnant naissance à des trouvailles techniques ou esthétiques. Cathy Berberian est ainsi devenue la «?muse de Darmstadt?», inspirant plusieurs grands noms du XXe siècle, dont son mari Luciano Berio. Outre le fait qu'elle a considérablement élargi l'éventail des techniques vocales dans la musique classique, Cathy Berberian a contribué à l'émancipation de la voix dans le genre expérimental. Dans le programme «?O Cathy?», le collectif Nemø rend hommage à la musicienne en associant certaines de ses compositions à des œuvres écrites à son intention, pièces dans lesquelles le rôle d'interprète égale celui du compositeur. L'interprétation, l'arrangement et la composition repoussent les limites dans cette nouvelle production de Nemø.

Cathy Berberian werd de 'Muze van Darmstadt' en inspireerde grote namen uit de twintigste eeuw, waaronder haar echtgenoot Luciano Berio. Berberian breidde niet alleen het scala aan vocale technieken in de klassieke muziek aanzienlijk uit, maar droeg ook bij aan de emancipatie van de stem in het experimentele genre. In het programma 'O Cathy' brengt Nemø een eerbetoon aan de muzikante door haar composities te combineren met werken die voor haar geschreven zijn, waarin de rol van uitvoerder gelijk is aan die van componist. Interpretatie, arrangement en compositie verleggen de grenzen in deze nieuwe productie van dit boeiende collectief.
