A Day is a Hundred Years

In his work, scenographer and theatre-maker Jozef Wouters always relates to an existing place, a building, ...  At A Day is a Hundred Years he interweaves the story of Decoratelier, with that of Barry Ahmad Talib, an artist from Sagale (Guinea), also caretaker of Decoratelier. They have shared the studio since 2019. To make A Day is a Hundred Years, Joseph and Barry cut thousands of leaves from pieces of fabric for Barry's tree sculptures. The conversations they had while working long hours created a connection between Sagale and Brussels. A place that is neither there nor here, but somewhere in between.It is Decoratelier's façade that plays the lead on stage.  Traditional theatre techniques such as infinis and trompe l'oeil are combined with a revolving stage and a cast that mainly consists of technicians. The show spins off into an urban plan in the form of a simple fable.  That is also how A Day is a Hundred Years dramatises the exchange between open and closed, private and public, that so defines our urban reality.  • Jozef Wouters (Born in 1986 in Belgium) is a scenographer, theatre-maker and visual artist who lives and works in Brussels. His work often relates to a specific location and engages with spaces, social processes and collective imagination. He has been an integral part of Damaged Goods since 2017. Wouters founded Decoratelier along with technical director Menno Vandevelde in 2016. His most recent performances are INFINI (2016-now); Underneath Which Rivers Flow (2019), The Soft Layer (2019/2021/2024) and A Day is a Hundred Years (2023). He also creates scenographies for various artists and organisations inside and outside the performing arts.• Decoratelier is a constantly evolving project based in a former factory in Molenbeek. From 2016 to April 2024, Decoratelier operates as an artists' workspace and incubator for interdisciplinary collaborations and social experimentation. The first project to take shape within the walls of Decoratelier was Atelier III (2017). In summer 2020, Decoratelier hosted the outdoor festival Something when it doesn't rain, a heterogeneous programme of workshops, music, performances, screenings and more, organised in close collaboration with local residents and local organisations and artists. Ever since, Decoratelier has organised an annual summer festival. In 2021, Wouters and Decoratelier designed and built the open-air swimming pool FLOW in Anderlecht, an initiative of Pool is Cool, together with around 50 local young people. For the grandstand system underlying FLOW and many other grandstands, forms of scenography and (location) projects by Decoratelier, Jozef Wouters received a Henry Van de Velde Award 2022 in the 'Spaces' category. FLOW was nominated for the European Prize for Public Space in 2022 and was shortlisted for the European Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van der Rohe Awards in 2023. Jozef Wouters was in 2019 awarded the Flemish Culture Prize (Ultima) in the performing arts category for Decoratelier together with co-founder and technical director Menno Vandevelde.

Dans son travail, le scénographe et homme de théâtre Jozef Wouters réagit toujours à un lieu existant, un bâtiment, ...  Dans A Day is a Hundred Years, il entremêle l'histoire du Decoratelier, avec celle de Barry Ahmad Talib, un artiste de Sagale (Guinée), également gardien du Decoratelier. Ils partagent l'atelier depuis 2019. Pour A Day is a Hundred Years, Joseph et Barry ont découpé des milliers de feuilles dans du tissu pour les sculptures d'arbres de Barry. Les conversations qu'ils ont eues pendant les longues heures de travail ont créé un lien entre Sagale et Bruxelles. Un lieu qui n'est ni là ni ici, mais quelque part entre les deux.La façade du Decoratelier occupe une place centrale sur scène.  Les techniques théâtrales traditionnelles telles que l'infini et le trompe-l'œil sont combinées à un plateau tournant et à une distribution principalement composée de technicien·nes. Sa pratique est souvent liée à un lieu spécifique et s'intéresse aux espaces, aux processus sociaux et à l'imagination collective. Il fait partie intégrante de Damaged Goods depuis 2017. Wouters a cofondé Decoratelier avec le directeur technique Menno Vandevelde en 2016. Durant l'été 2020, le Decoratelier a accueilli le festival en plein air Something when it doesn't rain, un programme hétéroclite d'ateliers, de musique, de performances, de projections et de surcroit, organisé en étroite collaboration avec les habitant·es du quartier et les organisations et artistes locaux·les. Le  Decoratelier organise depuis lors un festival d'été annuel. En 2021, Wouters et Decoratelier ont conçu et construit la piscine en plein air FLOW à Anderlecht, une initiative de Pool is Cool, en collaboration avec une cinquantaine de jeunes du quartier. Jozef Wouters a reçu un Henry Van de Velde Award 2022 dans la catégorie 'Spaces' pour le système de tribunes qui sous-tend FLOW et pour de nombreuses autres tribunes, scénographies et projets (de localisation) de Decoratelier. FLOW a été nominé pour le Prix européen de l'espace public 2022 et a été présélectionné pour le Prix européen d'architecture contemporaine 2023 - Mies Van der Rohe Awards. Scenograaf en theatermaker Jozef Wouters reageert in zijn werk steeds op een bestaande plek. In A Day is a Hundred Years verweeft hij het verhaal van Decoratelier met dat van Barry Ahmad Talib, een kunstenaar uit Sagale (Guinea) én conciërge van Decoratelier. Sinds 2019 delen ze samen het atelier. Voor A Day is a Hundred Years  knipte Jozef samen met Barry duizenden blaadjes uit stof voor Barry’s boomsculpturen. Door de gesprekken die ze voerden tijdens het lange werken ontstond een verbinding tussen Sagale en Brussel. Een plek die niet daar of hier is, maar ergens tussenin. Op de scène krijgt de façade van Decoratelier een centrale plaats.  Traditionele theatertechnieken zoals infini’s en trompe l’oeil combineren Wouters en Talib met een draaiend podium en een cast die vooral uit technici bestaat. Zo ontspint de voorstelling zich tot een stedenbouwkundig plan in de vorm van een eenvoudige fabel. A Day is a Hundred Years dramatiseert de uitwisseling tussen open en gesloten, privé en publiek, die zo bepalend is voor onze stedelijke realiteit.   • Jozef Wouters (1986, BE) is een scenograaf, theatermaker en beeldend kunstenaar, die woont en werkt in Brussel. In de zomer van 2020 vond in Decoratelier het openluchtfestival Something when it doesn’t rain plaats, een heterogeen programma met workshops, muziek, performances, screenings en meer, georganiseerd in nauwe samenwerking met buurtbewoners en lokale organisaties en kunstenaars. Sindsdien organiseert Decoratelier een jaarlijks zomerfestival. In 2021 ontwierp en bouwde Wouters met Decoratelier in Anderlecht het openluchtzwembad FLOW, een initiatief van Pool is Cool, samen met een 50-tal jongeren uit de buurt. Voor het tribunesysteem dat aan de basis ligt van FLOW en vele andere tribunes, scenografieën en (locatie)projecten van Decoratelier ontving Jozef Wouters een Henry Van de Velde-award 2022 in de categorie ‘Spaces’. FLOW werd in 2022 genomineerd voor de European Prize for Public Space en kreeg in 2023 een plek op de shortlist van de European Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van der Rohe Awards.
