Ping-pong club. 25 years L’employé du moi

It all started exactly 25 years ago with a fanzine for students in Brussels, ‘Le Spon’. Meanwhile, the independent, alternative and collective publisher L'employé du moi came a long way. Today, their catalogue counts more than 130 original creations.

On the occasion of this festive anniversary, the publishing team decided to scrutinise its own evolution in an exhibition. How can the cultural and artistic specificity of L'employé du moi be captured while making such varied and diverse productions? The exhibition tries to answer that question in four major themes in the catalogue.

The reinterpretation of genre comics, the role of intimacy, political choices and the coming-of-age story will all be explored, with selections of original plates illustrating the themes. The exhibition allows different works to dialogue with each other, as the collective is used to doing, in the style of an exciting ping-pong match.

Si tout a commencé il y a tout juste 25 ans avec un fanzine étudiant à Bruxelles, « Le Spon », L’employé du moi a depuis parcouru une sacrée trajectoire. Structure d’édition indépendante, alternative et collective, son catalogue compte à ce jour plus de 130 bandes dessinées de création.

Pour son anniversaire, l’équipe a décidé de s’interroger sur le cheminement de sa politique éditoriale à travers une exposition réflexive. Comment représenter la proposition culturelle et artistique de L’employé du moi alors que ses productions sont hétéroclites et que le champ des possibles paraît sans limites ? C’est à cette question que l’exposition va tenter de répondre en mettant en lumière quatre grands axes du catalogue.

Ainsi, la réinterprétation des récits de genre, le rôle de l’intime, la chose politique et l’itinéraire qui mène de l’adolescence à l’âge adulte seront développés avec des sélections de planches originales qui illustreront toutes ces thématiques. L’exposition fera dialoguer les différentes œuvres, comme le collectif a l’habitude de travailler, à la manière d’un bel échange au ping-pong.

Het begon allemaal precies 25 jaar geleden met een fanzine voor studenten in Brussel, “Le Spon”. Intussen legde de onafhankelijke, alternatieve en collectieve uitgeverij L'employé du moi een lange weg af. Hun catalogus telt vandaag meer dan 130 originele creaties.

Naar aanleiding van deze feestelijke verjaardag besloot het team van de uitgeverij om de eigen evolutie onder de loep te nemen in een tentoonstelling. Hoe kan de culturele en artistieke specificiteit van L'employé du moi gevat worden, terwijl ze zulke gevarieerde en diverse producties maken? Op die vraag probeert de tentoonstelling een antwoord te bieden in vier grote thema’s uit de catalogus.

De herinterpretatie van genrestrips, de rol van intimiteit, politieke keuzes en het coming of age-verhaal zullen allemaal worden verkend, met selecties van originele platen die de thema's illustreren. De tentoonstelling laat verschillende werken met elkaar in dialoog gaan, zoals het collectief gewend is te doen, in de stijl van een spannende pingpong partij.
