A two-day training/hanging-out/sharing practice for artists/researchers focusing
on the variational aspects of the genre of horror. In this setting, one can get
introduced to the historical elements of the genre, such as zombies, gore and
tortured ghostly demons, vicious animals and cannibal witches, as well as
medieval serial killer monsters, unnatural disasters and Frankenstein projects.
Parallelly foregrounding different scales and registers of horror for
reconsideration, ranging from speculative fiction, and sci-fi cinema, to
medieval bestiaries, inducing “bad feelings” such as fear, uncanny, awe, mania,
panic, loss, tension and anxiety. The participants will start by reimagining a
positive aspect of their practices, locating the value system, and deciding,
with the help of the others, what can be turned into horror. Different from
critical reflection on horror, to practice horror is to enter a symbolic realm
of expressiveness at the vicinity of horror, where another kind of relation to
the articulation of values becomes possible. In this turn, parts of an artistic
practice can get a chance of being thought of as “fucked-up”. It is a sharing
environment, where we present to each other: to what extent what we do can
become a disaster, cause damage, torture, or simply be horrific? This workshop
is developed in the crossline between Sina’s interest in medieval bestiaries and
Adrijana’s preoccupation with artistic anxieties within their own artistic work.
The workshop is open for registering and is addressed to artists/researchers
interested in sharing, horror, fabulous writing and humor, and are prepared to
devote two afternoons to the workshop. If you are interested, please register
at tickets@kaai.be and add a short paragraph or sentence about yourself/your
practice/your expectations from the workshop. The setting of the workshop is
also imagined as an installation, a playful ambience with horror accessories and
references, which will be open to the public after 18:00 on both days. On Friday
at 18:30, they will do a public presentation of the workshop. PROGRAMMEWorkshop

marteling of gewoonweg afschuwelijk?

Roberta Miss aka Nur/Se Choreographer and researcher Sara Manente has since 2018
focused on the intersection between live art and living cultures and in ROT,
these two worlds come together. For this editorial (ROT magazine) and curatorial
(ROT Garden) project, she draws inspiration from fermentation techniques and the
world of fungi. At the Kaaistudios, Manente is setting up Black Garden, the
third part of ROT Garden. Each ROT Garden is a landscape installation consisting
of sounds, smells, texts, textures and dance. This Black Garden focuses on the
dark world of infections and 'immunitarianism' (the political control of the
immune system) full of sci-fi, horror and doom. Together with befriended
Brussels creators, Sara Manente will activate the garden for two days. Philippe
Janssens shows his installation The Commerce of Relationships there, Carolina
Mendonça presents a new version of her sci-fi speculative project Zones of
resplendence, and Sina Seifee's brings the lecture performance Loose Analogies
of Dirt and Clean. Fellow artists/researchers are welcome to Adrijana

From sanitation to pollution, passing through animality and spiritual states of

The artist duo Pablo Lilienfeld and Federico Vladimir delve into the family
history of their mothers, who are named Monica. Both Monicas were born in
Argentina in the 1950s as daughters of war refugees and later moved to Spain.
One was an ecofeminist painter, the other a muse and nude model for her
husband's photos. The paintings and photographs form the starting point for a
speculative telenovela in which their diasporic genealogies are
unravelled. Musician and choreographer Pablo Lilienfeld and visual
artist Federico Vladimir have shared an artistic practice since 2014. Their work
is intimately intertwined with their relationship and often starts from intimacy
to question prevailing narratives about collectivity. In their performances,
videos and installations they work together with family, friends, lovers,
viruses, ghosts and other companions. Their work has been presented at festivals
such as Copenhagen Contemporary, Santarcangelo, Bâtard, Belluard and Sâlmon.

In CINDY, movement, sound, and imagery are dissected into isolated scores.
Through a game-theoretical algorithm with live coding, a sensitive interaction
between all elements emerges, resulting in a new choreography each time.
Inspired by the looping movements of Hurricane Cindy, Flóra Boros creates a
game-theoretical pattern that propels her body through space. Flóra Boros is a
Hungarian performer and choreographer who earned a degree in contemporary dance
from the University of Vienna in 2021. Her work has been presented at venues

With Cleaning Oracles, Mary Szydłowska, Federico Protto, Eimi Leggett and
Aleksandra Borys create a research space in which slowness, attention and
zoning-out are central. As a spectator you are invited to settle down and share
the space with five performers and a musician. Expect a performative experience
that evokes reflections on work, fatigue, relaxation, leisure and speculation
about the future. A hypnotic state in which deep tranquillity encounters
urgency. Mary Szydłowska is an artist and choreographer whose work focuses on
peripheral phenomena and ecologies of attention in the context of architectural
spaces and institutional environments. In recent years, Mary has developed a
diptych of solo works about the gestures of cleaning, in which reflection on the
politics of labour is combined with an embodied investigation of cleanliness and

How are memories retained? And what does it mean when they start to fade?
In HOLDERS, choreographer Francesca Chiodi Latini uses movement and textiles as
metaphors for the elusive processes of memory. Together with four older
performers and two musicians, she creates a visual and moving exchange across
generations, in which archetypes such as parent/child, teacher/student and
spectator/performer are slowly erased. Francesca Chiodi Latini is a performer
and choreographer. In 2017 she obtained a bachelor's degree in dance from the
Antwerp Conservatory and from 2019 to 2022 she was an artist in residence at
wpZimmer, where she created JARDIN POILU. In 2025 she will premiere the new
performance HOLDERS. As a performer, Francesca has worked with Lisbeth Gruwez,
Virgilio Sieni, Marcelo Evelin and Corinne Lanselle. She is also active as a
teacher of Iyengar Yoga.

Welcome to the table. Today on the menu: a vegan meal with a side dish of
alternatives for care and family. Since the rise of industrialization and
capitalism, the nuclear family has been regarded as the pre-eminent financially
viable social unit. But what are possible alternatives? In the social art
project Tafelen, Anna Schlooz investigates different forms of family formation
