Schubert: Symphony No.9 "The Great"
01maart
19:00 - 20:30
Ton De Leeuwstraat 90, 1011 DE Amsterdam, Pays-Bas
Description
Orchestra Lagrandt is a new chamber ensemble that brings together the young talents of Holland’s classical music scene. The group plans to specialize in music of the 19th and early 20th centuries, with a unique respect for the way it was performed in its time. Lagrandt is particularly interested in reviving the Romantic spirit, one that held the individuality of an orchestra and its music in high esteem.
Schubert’s 9th Symphony is the perfect emblem of that epoch—a masterpiece that was misunderstood during its time. Franz Schubert (1797–1828) composed this “great” symphony between 1824 and 1826, hopeful for a Viennese premiere by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. However, the orchestra rehearsed the work several times in 1827 before ultimately deeming it too difficult for their forces. It was not for another twelve years that Robert Schumann would obtain the manuscript from Schubert’s brother and pass it on to Felix Mendelssohn for its 1839 premiere at the Leipzig Gewandhaus.
A work as immense as Schubert’s 9th symphony opens endless artistic possibilities. Orchestra Lagrandt will present it as their premiere concert to interpret a new sound of heroic Romanticism. Join them March 1st at 19:00 in the Haitinkzaal of Conservatorium van Amsterdam for their bold debut.
