THE SURROGATE

Description
Megan Brailey explores transformation, modification, liminality, and the inexplicable as the essential language of butoh dance-theatre, encapsulating unconventional physical languages and psycho-somatic research. They use prosthetics and butoh to explore queer feminist ideas of inhabiting other bodies and archiving embodied histories and ‘bodily memory’, and thus expressing, not only the plasticity of human narratives, but the body itself. This series in particular explores the object ontology of stagecraft; the micro-expressions of cognitive-capitalist structures through objects; and the political radicality of the morphos body.
Through a collaboration, Brailey and musician Paolo Possidente, trained jazz drummer and electronics improvisor, investigate the relationship between artistic expression and conceptual restraint, and attempt to radically redefine the relation between moving body and music.
‘The Surrogate’ is a performance centred around the surrogacy of the body through objects, ‘body doubles’, where the body is deconstructed: made a consumable object in a setting which is both familiar and estranged. The performance espouses the feast or carnival as a surrogate of revolutionary potential, invoking through the ritual of butoh, ecstatic, maenadic dancing. The disseminated inorganic matter, the abundance of self which dissects the totality into segments, is served and consumed by its own origin. Ekstasis is rebirth, the disruption of personal and political hauntological forms which seek to reach into the future and disaggregate the past with a staunch physicality.
