of Sound and Song 5

Description

"of Sound and Song" is a piano concert series presented by The Merchant House, a contemporary art gallery, and Tomoko Mukaiyama in a historical canal house in Amsterdam.

As we are moving away from the winter's darkness, we invite you to celebrate the onset of spring with us, in an intimate living room-style concert. This fifth edition will be a solo performance by Tomoko Mukaiyama. It is the first time she will be playing John Cage’s Four Walls (1944), an intriguing piece originally written for a dance performance. It is followed by Consolation (1989), a meditative and hypnotic piece of the unusual Russian composer Alexander Raskatov. To honour and observe the powerful changes in light and nature, this performance will have a sense of ritual, a prayer for the deities of springtime.

Tomoko Mukaiyama (Pianist/Artist/Director)

The Japanese-Dutch pianist and artist Tomoko Mukaiyama is praised for her multimedia performances in which she embarks on the sensory adventure together with her audience. Different disciplines, their forms and styles, are used and traversed on equal footing. Recurring themes in her work are gender inequality, the female body and the relationship with our natural environment, often elaborated from the possibilities and frictions of a local situation. In addition to regular art centers such as the Lincoln Center New York, the Paris Opera, museums, her work is performed via online platforms, on streets and squares, private homes up to and including the Seto fish market (JP).

THE MERCHANT HOUSE

The Merchant House (TMH) presents contemporary art to discover, immerse oneself in, and collect. Each project seeks to address pressing questions in art and brings together an extended exhibition, event series, and publication. Founded by Marsha Plotnitsky in 2013 in a 17th-century canal house in Amsterdam, TMH stands for a new reflection on the art-in-the-city traditions. In curating the art projects in the Amsterdam canal house, Marsha Plotnitsky, our Founding Artistic Director, explores the artistic, spatial, and organisational possibilities of an art merchant construct.
