The jay, the train, the moss, the soil trembling. How to listen to a space considered empty? ‘underneath it flickers’ takes different perspectives on La friche Josaphat, a lush, green wasteland in Brussels threatened by planned real estate development. By questioning our ways of listening, the film seeks to connect with the land as a single body inhabited by many creatures.

Lau Persijn is a Brussels-based filmmaker and one of the driving forces behind One Field Fallow, a queer-run community and artistic research space. In June 2024, Lau earned a master’s degree in film from KASK Ghent with underneath it flickers. The graduation film was shortlisted for the Competition for Belgian Student Shorts at Film Fest Ghent.

We see a man with a microphone walking through green fields. He listens intently to the grass, the air and the trees around him. His microphone also picks up sounds from the past: the voices of Black people singing about having to obey a master, about a white villain who shot a Black woman and reports about protests that lasted 86 nights.

Theresa Delsoin, Lisa Marie Malloy, JP Sniadecki and Ray Whitaker are Little Egypt Collective: a multiracial, multigenerational group of artists from Little Egypt in Southern Illinois and Chicago. They approach filmmaking as a mode of collective world-building and a means of investigating social conditions of inequality in Southern Illinois, a region historically marked by economic and racial injustices. They utilize speculative fiction and conceptual playfulness to generate new expressions of community spirit and resistance, and to participate in Cairo’s resurgence. On the Battlefield, directed by collective members Theresa Delsoin, Lisa Marie Malloy, JP Sniadecki, and Ray Whitaker, is the collective’s first work; it has screened internationally at venues including Cinéma du Réel, Taiwan International Documentary Festival, and DC/DOX.

Le geai, le train, la mousse, le sol qui tremble. Comment écouter un espace considéré comme vide ? 'underneath it flickers' adopte différents points de vue sur la friche Josaphat, un terrain vague verdoyant de Bruxelles menacé par un projet immobilier. En interrogeant nos manières d'écouter, le film cherche à se connecter à la terre comme à un corps unique habité par de nombreuses créatures.

Lau Persijn est un·e cinéaste basé·e à Bruxelles et l'une des forces motrices de One Field Fallow, un laboratoire artistique queer, communautaire et autogéré. En juin 2024, Lau a obtenu un master en cinéma au KASK de Gand avec underneath it flickers, sélectionné immédiatement pour la Competition for Belgian Student Shorts au FilmFest Gent.

Son microphone capte aussi des sons du passé : les chants de Noirs obligés de répondre à un maître, un homme blanc qui tira sur une femme noire, les témoiganges d'une manifestation qui dura 86 nuits.

Theresa Delsoin, Lisa Marie Malloy, JP Sniadecki et Ray Whitaker forment ensemble le Little Egypt Collective, un groupe d’artistes multiracial et multigénérationnel basé à Little Egypt, dans le sud de l’Illinois, et à Chicago. Ce collectif conçoit le cinéma comme une manière de créer des mondes collectivement et comme un outil pour explorer les inégalités sociales dans une région marquée par des injustices économiques et raciales. À travers la fiction spéculative et un jeu conceptuel, ils inventent de nouvelles expressions de communauté et de résistance, contribuant à la revitalisation de Cairo. On the Battlefield, leur première œuvre, a été présentée notamment au Taiwan International Documentary Festival, à DC/DOX, et à la Berlinale.

De gaai, de trein, het mos, de bevende aarde. Hoe luister je naar een ruimte die als leeg wordt beschouwd? underneath it flickers ervaart vanuit verschillende perspectieven la friche Josaphat, een groen braakliggend terrein in Brussel dat wordt bedreigd door vastgoedontwikkeling. Door onze manieren van kijken en luisteren in vraag te stellen, tracht de film een connectie te maken met het land als één lichaam, bewoond door vele wezens.

Lau Persijn is een Brusselse filmmaker en een van de drijvende krachten achter One Field Fallow, een grassroots queer artistiek laboratorium-buurthuis-vrijplaats. In juni 2024 behaalde Lau met underneath it flickers een master in film aan KASK Gent. De afstudeerfilm werd meteen opgepikt door FilmFest Gent voor de Competition For Belgian Student Shorts.

We zien een man met een microfoon door groene velden lopen. Hij luistert aandachtig naar het gras, de lucht en de bomen om hem heen. Zijn microfoon vangt ook geluiden uit het verleden op: stemmen van zwarte mensen die zingen over het moeten gehoorzamen aan een meester, over een witte schurk die een zwarte vrouw neerschoot, en getuigenissen van protesten die 86 nachten duurden.

Theresa Delsoin, Lisa Marie Malloy, JP Sniadecki en Ray Whitaker vormen samen Little Egypt Collective: een multiraciale, multigenerationele groep kunstenaars uit Little Egypt in Southern Illinois en Chicago. Ze benaderen film als een vorm van samen werelden maken en als een middel om sociale ongelijkheden in Zuid-Illinois te onderzoeken, een regio die historisch gezien wordt gekenmerkt door economisch en raciaal onrecht. Door middel van speculatieve fictie en conceptuele speelsheid creëren ze nieuwe uitdrukkingen van gemeenschapszin en verzet, en dragen ze bij aan de heropleving van Cairo. On the Battlefield is het eerste werk van het collectief en is onder meer vertoond op het Taiwan International Documentary Festival, DC/DOX en de Berlinale.
