Looking Through Objects: Women in Contemporary Polish Design

As part of its temporary exhibition programme, the Design Museum Brussels also offers a perspective on contemporary European design. After Greece, the Czech Republic and Hungary, the focus will be now on Poland’s in May 2025. Looking Through Objects: Women in Contemporary Polish Design is proposed as an accompanying event of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union cultural programme and showcases the works of 16 Polish women designers. From product design to one-off pieces, these creations tell the story of a rich array of singular achievements. Echoing the panel discussion on this subject organised last January in collaboration with Disegno magazine, this exhibition is the result of the work of the curators Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka, Gian Luca Amadei and Dario Lombardi with the Polish Institute Brussels, whom the Design Museum Brussels is delighted to welcome.

Looking Through Objects is an original exhibition that illustrates the major role played by women designers in Poland today. They are now the active, independent protagonists who think about design in a way that is far removed from the roles of muses and patrons.

The exhibition presents a selection of objects that offer an insight into the field of design in Poland. The aim is to understand the influence and contribution of these designers to the creative process: their inspirations, strategies and approaches to materials. The multitude of creative visions and modes of design practice prove that art, craft and technology are combined and can coexist in a single project. From pragmatic approaches to creative freedom, there are many different creative processes, and this exhibition reflects that. Design is a catalyst for art, craft and industry, translating the author’s individual and creative choices.

Dans le cadre de sa programmation d’expositions temporaires, le Design Museum Brussels offre également un regard sur la création européenne contemporaine. Après la Grèce, la Tchéquie et la Hongrie, c’est la Pologne qui est au rendez-vous dès mai 2025. Looking Through Objects : Women in Contemporary Polish Design est un événement proposé dans le cadre du programme culturel de la présidence polonaise du Conseil européen et présente les œuvres de 16 femmes designers polonaises. Du design de produits à la pièce unique, ces créations racontent la richesse de réalisations singulières. Faisant écho à la rencontre organisée en janvier dernier autour de ce sujet en collaboration avec le magazine Designo, cette exposition est le fruit du travail des commissaires Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka, Gian Luca Amadei et Dario Lombardi avec l’Institut polonais de Bruxelles, que le Design Museum Brussels est ravi d’accueillir.


Looking Through Objects est une proposition originale qui illustre le rôle majeur que les designers femmes jouent aujourd’hui en Pologne. Elles sont désormais les protagonistes actives et indépendantes qui pensent le design bien loin des rôles de muses et de mécènes.

Le récit de Looking Through Objects partage une sélection d’objets qui offre un aperçu du champ du design en Pologne. Il s’agit de comprendre l’influence et la contribution de ces designers au processus créatif : leurs inspirations, leurs stratégies et leurs approches des matériaux. La multitude de visions créatives et de modes de pratique du design prouve que l’art, l’artisanat et la technologie sont en fait combinés et peuvent coexister dans un projet unique. De l’approche pragmatique à la liberté créative, les processus créatifs sont multiples et cette exposition en est le reflet. Le design est un catalyseur pour l’art, l’artisanat et l’industrie, où transparaissent les choix individuels et créatifs des designers.

Als onderdeel van zijn tijdelijke tentoonstellingsprogramma biedt het Design Museum Brussels ook een perspectief op hedendaags Europees design. Na Griekenland, Tsjechië en Hongarije is het nu de beurt aan Polen in mei 2025. Looking Through Objects: Women in Contemporary Polish Design wordt voorgesteld als een begeleidend evenement van het culturele programma van het Poolse voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie en toont het werk van 16 Poolse vrouwelijke ontwerpers. Van productontwerp tot eenmalige stukken, deze creaties vertellen het verhaal van een rijk scala aan unieke prestaties. De tentoonstelling sluit aan bij de paneldiscussie over dit onderwerp die afgelopen januari werd georganiseerd in samenwerking met het tijdschrift Disegno. En is het resultaat van het werk van de curatoren Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka, Gian Luca Amadei en Dario Lombardi in samenwerking met het Pools Instituut in Brussel, die het Design Museum Brussels met veel plezier verwelkomt.


Looking Through Objects is een originele tentoonstelling die de belangrijke rol illustreert die vrouwelijke ontwerpers vandaag spelen in Polen. Zij zijn nu de actieve, onafhankelijke hoofdrolspelers die nadenken over design op een manier die ver afstaat van de rol van de muze en mecenas.


De tentoonstelling presenteert een selectie van objecten die inzicht geven in design in Polen. Het doel is om de invloed en bijdrage van deze ontwerpers aan het creatieve proces te begrijpen: hun inspiraties, strategieën en benaderingen van materialen. De veelheid aan creatieve visies en manieren van ontwerppraktijk bewijzen dat kunst, ambacht en technologie gecombineerd worden en naast elkaar kunnen bestaan in één enkel project. Van pragmatische benaderingen tot creatieve vrijheid, er zijn veel verschillende creatieve processen en deze tentoonstelling weerspiegelt dat. Design is een katalysator voor kunst, ambacht en industrie en vertaalt de individuele creatieve keuzes van de auteur.
