Belgian composer Wim Henderickx’s new Timpani Concerto is paired with Beethoven’s Third Symphony, a personal favourite of Wim’s and a lasting source of inspiration.

A passionate supporter of revolutionary ideals, Beethoven believed in justice and brotherhood, using music as a force for

change. For him, adhering to classical forms and styles was like surrendering to a dictatorial society—so with his Third Symphony, he forged a new musical path. Eroica was the first symphony to link music with social dynamics, marking the dawn of the Romantic era.

When Belgian composer Wim Henderickx unexpectedly passed away in December 2022, he left behind several nearly finished compositions. For the Brussels Philharmonic and his close friend Gert François, Wim had already been developing a concept for

a timpani concerto. His longtime musical assistant, Diederik Glorieux, worked with Wim’s family to prepare this piece for performance. “It’s quite a challenge to place the timpani in the spotlight without making it sensational, but with integrity. Wim’s concerto manages to capture the instrument’s essence in a sincere and powerful way.” (Gert François)

Le nouveau Concerto pour timbales du compositeur Belge Wim Henderickx est présenté aux côtés de la troisième symphonie de Beethoven, une symphonie que Wim adorait et dont il tirait une inspiration durable.

Beethoven, fervent défenseur des idéaux révolutionnaires, voyait la musique comme un moyen de changer le monde. Pour lui, respecter les formes classiques équivalait à se soumettre à une société autoritaire – c’est pourquoi, avec sa 3e Symphonie, il ouvre une nouvelle voie musicale. Eroica est la première symphonie à relier la musique aux enjeux sociaux, annonçant ainsi l’ère romantique.

Quand le compositeur Belge Wim Henderickx est décédé soudainement en décembre 2022, plusieurs compositions presque terminées sont restées sur sa table de travail. Pour le Brussels Philharmonic et son ami proche Gert François, Wim travaillait déjà sur le concept d’un concerto pour timbales. Son assistant musical de longue date, Diederik Glorieux, a collaboré avec la famille de Wim pour finaliser cette oeuvre. « C’est un vrai défi de placer les timbales sous les projecteurs sans tomber dans le sensationnel et en restant authentique. Pourtant, le concerto de Wim parvient à capturer l’essence de cet instrument de façon sincère et pénétrante. » (Gert François)

Het nieuwe Timpani Concerto van Wim Henderickx staat naast Beethovens Derde Symfonie: Wims favoriete symfonie, waaruit hij blijvende inspiratie putte.

Als hevige voorstander van de revolutie-idealen wil Beethoven met de kracht van muziek verandering brengen. Toegeven aan de klassieke vormentaal en stijlelementen is als zwichten voor de dictatoriale maatschappij - en dus slaat hij met deze Derde Symfonie een nieuw muzikaal pad in. Eroica verbindt voor het eerst muziek en maatschappij, en kondigt zo het tijdperk van de Romantiek aan.

Toen componist Wim Henderickx in december 2022 plots overleed, lagen er een aantal bijna afgewerkte composities op zijn werktafel. Voor Brussels Philharmonic en goede vriend Gert François werkte Wim al een tijdje aan een concept voor een paukenconcert. Na de twee vorige slagwerkconcerten (Raga I en Groove!) wilde hij nu iets totaal anders doen: het nieuwe concerto zou zowel tribale kracht als verinnerlijkte poëzie uitdrukken. “Het is een hele uitdaging om pauken in de spotlight te zetten zonder dat het sensationeel is, en wel integer. Toch slaagt Wims concerto erin om de essentie van het instrument oprecht en indringend neer te zetten.” (Gert François). Zijn jarenlange muzikale assistent, Diederik Glorieux, maakte - in overleg met de familie van Wim - deze score speelklaar voor uitvoering.
