From acquisition to exhibition. Collection management of modern works on paper at KMSKB

With an eye toward new generations of art historians, curators and researchers, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium propose a series of three talks on the Belgian avant-garde, the specificities of museum work and the role that paper plays within these contexts. This event will be concluding the research project “BePaper - Belgian Art on Paper in a European Perspective. 1918-1950” that started in 2020.

What does working with a museum collection of modern works on paper entail? From the acquisition to the exhibition, with insights on technical and historical research as well as conservation and collection management this talk wants to give an overview on the specificities that museum curators and researchers encounter when working with art on paper.



Laura Kollwelter is a scientific researcher at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, where she has operated as a researcher on several projects, including BePAPER - “Belgian Avant-Garde Art on Paper from a European Perspective, 1918-1950" (2020-2024) and “Before and after? Continuity or rupture? Belgian art around World War I” (2016-2018).

Sarah Van Ooteghem joined the team of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (RMFAB) in 2022 as curator of modern art on paper (19th-21st century). She previously worked as assistant curator at the Fondation Custodia/Frits Lugt Collection in Paris and at the Print Room of the Royal Library of Belgium.

Lise Vandewal currently works as a scientific researcher for the FRIABLE project at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, researching the provenance and exhibition history of modern artworks on paper in friable media from the collection of the Fin-de-Siècle Museum.

Laura Kollwelterest chercheuse scientifique aux Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, où elle a travaillé en tant que chercheuse sur plusieurs projets, dont BePAPER - « Belgian Avant-Garde Art on Paper from a European Perspective, 1918-1950 » (2020-2024) et « Avant et après? Continuité ou rupture?L’art belge au temps de la Grande Guerre » (2016-2018).



Sarah Van Ooteghem a rejoint l'équipe des Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique (MRBAB) en 2022 en tant que conservatrice de l'art moderne sur papier (19e-21e siècle). Elle a précédemment travaillé comme conservatrice adjointe à la Fondation Custodia/Collection Frits Lugt à Paris et au Cabinet des estampes de la Bibliothèque royale de Belgique.



Lise Vandewal travaille actuellement comme chercheuse scientifique pour le projet FRIABLE aux Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, où elle étudie la provenance et l'histoire des expositions d'œuvres d'art moderne sur papier dans des medias friables de la collection du Musée Fin-de-Siècle.

De Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België stelt graag een reeks van drie lezing voor aan de nieuwe generaties kunsthistorici, curatoren en onderzoekers over de Belgische avant-garde, de specificiteiten van werken met papier in museale context, en de rol die papier speelde binnen de Belgisch avant-garde. Dit evenement is de feestelijke afsluiting van het onderzoeksproject ''BePaper – Belgian Art on Paper in a European Perspective. 1918-1950" dat in 2020 van start ging.

Wat houdt het werken met een museumcollectie moderne werken op papier in? Van de aankoop tot de tentoonstelling, met inzichten in technisch en historisch onderzoek, conservering en collectiebeheer wil deze lezing een overzicht geven van specificiteiten die museumconservatoren en onderzoekers tegenkomen bij het werken met kunst op papier.



Laura Kollwelter is wetenschappelijk onderzoeker bij de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België, waar ze heeft meegewerkt aan verschillende projecten, waaronder BePAPER - “Belgian Avant-Garde Art on Paper from a European Perspective, 1918-1950” (2020-2024) en “Voor en na? Continuïteit of breuk? De Belgische kunst omstreeks Wereldoorlog I” (2016-2018).

Voordien werkte ze als assistent-conservator bij de Fondation Custodia/Frits Lugt Collection in Parijs en bij het Prentenkabinet van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek van België.

Lise Vandewal werkt momenteel als wetenschappelijk onderzoeker voor het FRIABLE-project in de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België, waar ze onderzoek doet naar de herkomst en tentoonstellingsgeschiedenis van moderne kunstwerken op papier in poederige media uit de collectie van het Fin-de-Siècle Museum.
