Description

Het Romeinse fort bij Vechten, in de provincie Utrecht, is een van de grootste en tegelijk een van de minst bekende forten langs de Romeinse grens (de limes) in Nederland. Het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden is al bijna tweehonderd jaar betrokken bij archeologisch onderzoek in Vechten. De afgelopen jaren zijn veel vondsten afkomstig uit deze plaats aan de collectie toegevoegd. De honderd meest bijzondere objecten zijn voor deze tentoonstelling geselecteerd, waaronder een aantal bijzondere helmen, een gezichtsmasker, luxe aardewerk en schoenzolen in alle soorten en maten.

Vondsten en mensen
Bij Fort Vechten graven mensen al bijna tweehonderd jaar objecten uit de Romeinse tijd op. Voor een groot gedeelte bevinden die zich in de collectie van het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden. In deze tentoonstelling staan niet alleen deze objecten en hun vindplaats centraal, maar ook de mensen die ze gevonden hebben.

Soldaten en archeologen
In de negentiende eeuw werden veel objecten verzameld door het Nederlandse leger, tijdens de bouw van het Waterliniefort bij Vechten. Daartussen zitten twee bijzondere miniatuuraltaren van kalksteen, een compleet zwaard, een beslagstuk van een officier van het Romeinse leger en twee fraaie beslagstukken van rijtuigen. In het begin van de twintigste eeuw voerde het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden opgravingen uit bij Fort Vechten. 

Wegwerkzaamheden
In de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw werd de A12 bij Vechten verbreed. Particuliere zoekers brachten toen een groot aantal Romeinse voorwerpen bij elkaar. Een aantal van deze verzamelingen werd de afgelopen jaren opgenomen in de museumcollectie. Bij elkaar gaat het om tienduizenden voorwerpen.

Gesitueerd in omgevingen die futuristisch en oud tegelijk ogen, vormt het werk een lappendeken van herinnerde landschappen uit Sunstrums jeugd in onder meer Botswana, Canada, Soedan, Sri Lanka, Malawi en Panama. Met een schimachtige ‘cast’ van personages verkent ze ongrijpbare ideeën over jezelf zijn en ergens thuishoren. KM21 presenteert Sunstrums eerste solotentoonstelling in Nederland.

In the Making #6: Anna Scott, Jed Wentz, Laila Neumann, Emma Williams Art Without Soul? Embodiment and Historical Performance Modern performance critics often scorn nineteenth-century actors and musicians, assuming that because they placed emphasis on exaggerated shapes and gestures they were merely showboating — engaging in empty posturing — rather than performing from the soul. Treatises of the period, however, suggest that this visual and sonic hyper-physicality was the means by which these performers generated, channeled, and communicated emotion; that they understood their art as originating not from the soul but from the body. Engaging with these practices today, therefore, is a necessarily embodied rather than abstract, intellectual endeavor; one that handles the performing body (both past and present) as a rich, creative resource rather than a soulless distraction. - IN THE MAKING The Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) of Leiden University and Art Institute West Den Haag are pleased to announce their close collaboration in the new public series ‘In the Making’. In six public sessions they will present to the public different practices of research in the arts. Artistic production has always expressed the forms in which we know, explore, and sense the world we live in. The current practice of research in the arts consciously assumes this exploration. In the past decades the focus on research in the domain of the arts has grown – as well as its role in universities and other research contexts – expressing its engagement with the realities of the world at large. ‘In The Making’ will address how artists conduct their research. Guest artist researchers and artist researchers from Leiden University will present their projects, approaches to research, methods and results. Each session will address questions inherent to these projects. ‘In The Making’ aims to deepen a perspective which conceives of artistic practice not as the sole product of individual visionaries but as a collective endeavor embedded in society. It addresses the role of art in the construction of the present and the creation of possible futures.

Deze tentoonstelling in het kader van 200 jaar KNRM zal lopen van 20 april tot en met 17 november 2024. In het hele land wordt aan dit bijzondere jubileum van de KNRM aandacht besteed in maritieme musea en de sociale media. Natuurlijk ook in ons museum in IJmuiden, waar de KNRM, sinds de opening van het Noordzeekanaal, een belangrijke post heeft. Bij het graven van het Noordzeekanaal in 1876 kwam IJmuiden in aanmerking voor het stationeren van een reddingboot. Voor die tijd deden de roeireddingboten in Wijk aan Zee en Zandvoort het reddingwerk. In eerste instantie werd in IJmuiden een vuurpijltoestel gestationeerd, waarmee een lijn over een gestrand schip geschoten kon worden. IJmuiden had toen maar weinig vaste bewoners, die een reddingboot zouden kunnen bemannen. In 1876 werd de eerste roeireddingboot aan de noordzijde van het kanaal gestationeerd. Jarenlang was IJmuiden de thuishaven van de beroemde reddingboot Neeltje Jacoba. Tegenwoordig ligt het materieel van de KNRM in IJmuiden klaar in de vissershaven. De reddingboot Johanna Louisa al sinds 1968 en vanaf begin 2003 ook de snelle (34 knopen) reddingboot Koos van Messel en Nh1816. De Koos van Messel en Nh1816 kunnen onder alle weersomstandigheden uitvaren. In de tentoonstelling wordt een overzicht gegeven van het station IJmuiden, de reddingboten en redders van toen en nu aan de hand van foto’s, films, audio en reddingsbootmodellen. Daarnaast is in de authentieke strandkar van de ZHNRM een maquette te bewonderen hoe in het verleden een strandredding met behulp van een lijnmortier, wippertoestel en mechanische schijnwerpers werd uitgevoerd. Deze objecten zijn ook in de zaal te zien. De oude mechanische schijnwerper kan met voldoende spierkracht gaan stralen. Zowel in beeld als geluid worden bijzondere reddingverhalen verteld. Zoals de reddingen van de ss.Salento en Flying Focus vliegtuigje, reddingen die ook redders niet snel vergeten. Beeld: KNRM IJmuiden

Dé manier om een kasteel te beleven zoals het hoort: een Garden Party. Tijdens de Garden Party krijg je een rondleiding, kan je ouderwetse tuinspelletjes spelen en strijk je met een picknickmand neer in de kasteeltuin, waar live muziek wordt gespeeld. Net als de kasteelbewoners van weleer hoef je je eigen picknickmand niet te vullen, dat doet de keukenbrigade van Slot Zuylen ‘downstairs’. Met de Garden Party boek je een compleet dagje uit. Of je nu op date gaat met z’n tweeën of met het hele gezin op pad wil. Bewonder eerst het kasteel op je eigen gemak en speel een spelletje croquet. Ga daarna mee met een rondleiding door de prachtige kasteeltuinen. Vervolgens haal je je goed gevulde picknickmand op en spreid je je kleedje op een mooi plekje in de kasteeltuin. Trio Clamore verwelkomt je hier in stijl, met vrolijke noten. In je picknickmand vind je huisgemaakte, vegetarische lekkernijen. De keukenbrigade heeft ze met veel liefde bereid, zoveel mogelijk met groenten en vruchten uit eigen tuin. En dat proef je: luxe belegde broodjes, fruitsalade, taartjes, hartige hapjes en biologische appel/perensap. Voor de liefhebber worden op de party zelf alcoholische dranken verkocht. Home and the World is een tentoonstelling van hedendaagse kunst in de historische context van Museum Van Loon samengesteld door gastcurator en kunsthistoricus Thomas J. Berghuis. Veertien kunstenaars van over de hele wereld onderzoeken de complexe verbanden tussen kolonialisme en nationalisme.  Het concept van de ‘natiestaat’ kwam in Europa tot ontwikkeling en werd in de loop van de 19e en 20e eeuw over de wereld verspreid. Het heeft landsgrenzen opgeleverd die niet altijd recht deden aan de bestaande manieren van samenleven. De natiestaat is niet de enige vorm en er zijn alternatieve manieren om als mensheid thuis te zijn in de wereld. In Home and the World presenteren de deelnemende kunstenaars deze alternatieven. Daarbij wordt de Wereldschool in Museum Van Loon geïntroduceerd: een publiek programma om wereldwijd met elkaar te spreken over alternatieven voor onze samenlevingen.
