A long, mysterious and highly cinematographic dialogue between the two men begins, culminating in a promise. For Juan entrusts his partner with a mission: to continue his research into Jan Gay, an incredible anthropologist from the early twentieth century, whose project to document lesbian life was scorned and long obliterated from modern understanding of the history of homosexual women.

Justin Torres werd in 1980 geboren in New York. Hij publiceerde in het literair tijdschrift Granta en in de New Yorker voor hij met Wij, de wilden zijn explosieve intrede maakte op het literaire toneel van de Verenigde Staten. In deze indrukwekkende debuutroman, die bij pers en publiek groot succes kende, vertelt hij het verhaal van drie aan hun lot overgelaten broers in een taal en ritme met een zinderende kracht. Daarna volgden tien jaren van stilte… tot vorig jaar Blackouts verscheen en de National Book Award ontving.

“Ik was naar het Paleis gekomen omdat de man die ik zocht er een kamer had. [...] Hij stond dicht bij de dood, en ik zou hem eender wat hebben beloofd.” De verteller van Blackouts komt aan op een mysterieuze plek, een verblijf in het midden van de woestijn waar een grote queer community woont. Daar treft hij Juan aan, een oude bekende met een fascinerende en charismatische uitstraling. Enkele jaren eerder was er tussen beide mannen een onwrikbare vriendschap ontstaan tijdens een verblijf in een psychiatrische instelling.

Er ontspint zich een lange en mysterieuze dialoog tussen de mannen die erg filmisch aandoet en die uitmondt in een belofte. Juan heeft aan zijn kameraad immers een missie toevertrouwd : hij draagt hem op om zijn onderzoek naar Jan Gay voort te zetten, een ongelooflijke antropologe uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw, wiens project om het lesbische leven te documenteren werd gedwarsboomd en voor lange tijd geschrapt uit de moderne queer geschiedschrijving.

Door echte archiefstukken te combineren met verzonnen herinneringen – foto’s, artikels, gecensureerde pagina’s uit de encyclopedie van Jan Gay – componeerde Justin Torres een roman die zowel poëtisch als beklemmend is. Door hun verhaal op te tekenen herstelt hij mannen en vrouwen in hun waarde. Het is een boek dat sporen nalaat.

Un premier roman impressionnant, succès critique et public dans lequel Justin Torres suivait une petite meute de frères livrés à eux-mêmes, et imposait une langue, un rythme, un lyrisme électrique. Suivront dix années de silence... avant la sortie, l’an dernier, de Blackouts, lauréat du National Book Award 2024. Sa traduction française arrive en cette rentrée aux éditions de l’Olivier, signée Laetitia Devaux.

Car Juan confie à son complice une mission : poursuivre ses recherches sur Jan Gay, une incroyable anthropologue du début du XXe siècle, qui a vu son projet de documenter la vie lesbienne bafoué, longtemps oblitéré de la compréhension moderne de l'histoire des homosexuelles.

Mêlant archives réelles et souvenirs inventés - photos, articles, et pages caviardées arrachées à l’encyclopédie de Jan Gay-, Justin Torres compose un roman hybride poétique et singulièrement hanté.
