In
bezoeken. Pas in november 1954 was het gehele museum klaar en vond de officiële
opening plaats.
Spoorwegmuseum.
The Age of Juliana
29november 2022
Raadhuisstraat 11, 1016 DB Amsterdam, Pays-Bas
Description
On the eve of the 75th anniversary of her inauguration as Queen of the Netherlands, De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam presents an exhibition about Juliana and her special kingship. The Age of Juliana, a Queen and Her Ideals is a polyphonic biography of a beloved queen. An eventful century is reflected in her personality and her ideals. Juliana is often characterized as 'princess next to the red carpet', headstrong and averse to protocol. Loved for its simplicity and humanity.
Quirky and averse to protocol
Loved for its simplicity and humanity. But she was also head of state in a century marked by unprecedented setbacks and spectacular prosperity.
The anniversary of the inauguration is the reason to look back in 2022. The generation that has personally experienced her encounters a generation for whom she is above all a historical figure. Together they look back on her eventful life. Juliana wanted – and we know this thanks to interviews – to be a modern queen and to connect. A selection of historians and experts, including biographers from then and now, have written about her. The exhibition provides context and aims to provide a complete and personal picture of this remarkable queen.
The Troubled World of the 20th Century
Juliana's reign (1948–80) was dominated by recovery and change. From the post-war reconstruction, the independence of Indonesia and Suriname and the Cold War to the arrival of large groups of guest workers, the state pension, divorce and secularization.
In the century of Juliana, the Netherlands gained momentum. The exhibition puts our country and her person side by side with known and unknown eyewitnesses who share their memories of Juliana in image and sound.
Through the eyes of, among others, Noraly Beyer, Elsbeth Etty, Kathleen Ferrier, Herman Pleij and Paul Rem, we get to know the young princess on her way to adulthood and see her grow into a steadfast head of state in the turbulent world of the twentieth century.
