No one flees for fun. Ali is 12 years old when he leaves Somalia. He travels the
dangerous road from the Horn of Africa to the heart of Europe. Along the way,
friendships are made despite the hardships and hope is found amidst the horror.
Ali has to cross several countries, a desert and the Mediterranean along with
hundreds of migrants seeking a better future. He arrives at the Brussels South
railway station in 2019, alone, without knowing a word of French or Dutch. He is
14 years old …
This incredible epic is the true story of Ali Abdi Omar, adapted for the opera
in collaboration with Ali himself. This moving creation reconstructs all the
stages of his journey. A sensory experience where electronic music, voice,
string and wind instruments, percussion and dance pay a vibrant tribute to the
resilience of a young boy forced, like so many others, to leave his family and
home in order to survive.

Nothing is what it seems at the old English country house Bly. When a new
governess takes up her position, she is told never to leave the children alone!
The shocking confrontation with the ghosts of her predecessor and a certain
Peter Quint soon makes it clear to her why. As protecting the children becomes
increasingly difficult, disturbing questions arise: What horrible acts took
place before her arrival? How innocent are the children? And are you really
seeing what’s before your eyes?
Drawing on Henry James’s intriguing ghost story, Benjamin Britten composed a
psychological thriller in chamber opera format with The Turn of the Screw.
Director Andrea Breth keeps the mystery intact, turning House Bly into a
labyrinth in which the characters are not the only ones to lose themselves.
Together with conductor Antonio Méndez, she will turn the screw on your
imagination as far as it goes…

composé, avec The Turn of the Screw, un thriller psychologique sous forme

In death you will find fulfilment, in your neighbour perhaps the truth behind
love. Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs
– posthumous gems by two of the greatest song composers if the twentieth century
– sing, each in their own way, about the big questions of life.
In 1948, when the rubble of the world conflagration was still smouldering,
Strauss set to music three poems by Hermann Hesse and one by Joseph von
Eichendorff for his swan song. These are lieder that, with their dreamy
lyricism, find comfort in the irrevocable cyclicity of nature and reassure us:
what if death brings peace?
The melancholy nature of Strauss’s late romanticism is at odds with the wit and
charm of Benjamin Britten’s pre-war Cabaret Songs. Based on poems by his good
friend W.H. Auden, ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ and
‘Calypso’ reveal, with their spirited, jazzy undertones, a very different facet
of the composer whose opera The Turn of the Screw we are also performing this
season.
After unforgettable appearances in Les Huguenots and Bastarda, among others,
soprano Lenneke Ruiten will now sing for the first time a recital on our stage.
Accompanied at the piano by Thom Janssen, she will present a richly filled
evening full of contrasts that will immerse you completely in the poetry of
song.

« Tell
me the Truth About Love », « Funeral Blues », « Johnny » et « Calypso », toutes

Benjamin Brittens vooroorlogse Cabaret Songs. ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’,
The Turn of the Screw
brengen.

Nowadays, the term opera seria brings to mind works by a few big names (Vivaldi,
Handel and, of course, Mozart) and some rather outdated features (castrati,
virtuoso arias, heroic plots, elaborate sets). In the 18th century, by contrast,
opera seria was a pastime 'très à la mode' for folks from all walks of life, a
show format that could be adapted to a wide range of contexts and a lucrative,
competitive economic market that conveyed the most prevailing moral values.
There is clearly a paradox here: Although opera seria has since become a
legitimate feature of the classical music repertoire, we view it as an art form
far removed from our contemporary aesthetic criteria. Nonetheless, it was once a
socio-economic phenomenon closely resembling another component of present-day
reality: the entertainment industry. How does this shift influence the way we
perceive and appreciate opera seria today?

Brussels. He has previously worked at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) and the
Musical Instrument Museum (MIM). He holds a doctorate in musicology from the
Free University of Brussels, where he now teaches, and is the author of a
dissertation on the question of meaning in music, viewed from the intersection
of history, philosophy and cognitive science. He also conducts ongoing research
on comedy in music and on Belgian musical life. He was a curator of the
exhibition ‘Toots 100: The Sound of a Belgian Legend’ and co-organised other

The Sound of a Belgian Legend et a co-organisé

heersende morele waarden overbracht.

Marriage is out of the question for Princess Turandot. To avoid tying the knot
with one or other stranger, she lays down a terrible rule: Anyone seeking her
hand must solve three riddles. While three right answers will result in
marriage, a single wrong answer will result in death by beheading. Blinded by
his love for the emperor’s daughter, the mysterious Prince Calaf takes up the
challenge.
Giacomo Puccini died in Brussels in 1924, leaving the score of his last opera
unfinished. A century later, conductor Kazushi Ono and director Christophe
Coppens prove that the work has more to offer than its iconic aria ‘Nessun
dorma’. Coppens sets Turandot in present-day Hong Kong, where an immensely rich
family is losing itself in money, power and violence. Trying to escape her
mother’s iron grip, the rebellious Turandot finds herself in a maelstrom of
derailed fantasy that drives her to extremes.

laatste opera onafgewerkt achter. Exact 100 jaar later bewijzen dirigent Kazushi
In

over dromen, over schaamte.
wereld. PaperPlanes bevraagt kapitalistische opvattingen over
momenteel gevestigd in Amsterdam. Zijn werk brengt Oosterse perspectieven in het
Westerse discours over sociopolitieke kwesties. Het werk van Pankaj werd o.a.
gepresenteerd in Holland Festival (NL), Belluard Bolwerk (SCH), DE SINGEL (BE),
wpzimmer (BE), Zürcher Theaterspektakel (SCH), Santarcangelo Festival (IT),
radialsystem (DE), Overheat IJ Festival (NL), performingborderslive (UK), Grand
Theatre Groningen (NL) en Veem House for Performance (NL). • Nick Verstand is
Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, The Shed (NYC), Museum of Contemporary Art

17.06 – UDANA QUINTET
Mozart, Dvorak, Zemlinsky and others
Célestine Wacquez | flute
Tine Verhoeven | oboe
Alba Mayorga Rodrigo | clarinet
Rob Laethem | bassoon
Jaso Enuset | French horn
Having inaugurated con brio our series of musical animations last summer, the
Udana Quintet returns to the festival under a new name, but with the very same
passion to share its music with the most diverse audiences. This wind ensemble
(formerly the Bizart Quintet) is made up of five musician friends from different
Belgian royal conservatoires. After playing together in various orchestral
projects (including the renowned Youth Orchestra Flanders), they decided to
pursue their shared passion for chamber music by forming a quintet. The vast
repertoire for wind quintet provides them with a formidable playing field for
developing a true group sound and original interpretations, full of zest and
character, that bring out the best in each member. Thus, this talented young
quintet breathes new life into a beloved 18th-century tradition – that of
performing ‘classical’ music in public spaces.
18.06 – DUO EURYDICE
Bach, Pergolesi, Mozart, Schubert and Bellini
Doris Brasseur | soprano
Camille Ledocq | cello
These talented graduates of the IMEP in Namur, and the Royal Conservatory of
Brussels saw their paths cross again in 2020 at the non-profit association Arts
Émoi. Eager to perform together, they set out on a collaborative exploration of
the musical and acoustic possibilities of their two instruments. With a focus on
opera and melody, their repertoire since covers a wide range of musical styles
and periods. Alongside their respective activities as musicologist and teacher,
the duo are constantly seeking new artistic avenues, whether it be a show built
around their mythological namesake or the present programme dedicated to the Bel
Canto, from Bach to Bellini. Thanks to these resourceful young women, opera will
resound both inside and outside the theatre this summer.
19.06 – QUÍRON QUARTET
Mozart, Haydn and others
Edgar Gomes | violin
Ricardo Vieira | violin
José Miguel Freitas | viola
Maria Nabeiro | cello
Inspired by their namesake, the mythological centaur of knowledge and art, the
Quíron Quartet ardently seek the knowledge of their musical formation as well as
the art of its public presentation. Founded in late 2020, the quartet have
already performed in Portugal, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland,
Italy and Poland, as well as at festivals including Casa del Quartetto and
Crans-Montana Classics. In 2023, the quartet completed a postgraduate degree at
the Royal Brussels Conservatoire under the supervision of Eric Robberecht and
won the prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary work at the Karol
Szymanowski International Music Competition. A member of the prestigious
Nederlandse StrijkKwartet Academie since 2021, these exceptional musicians are
also mentored by Chamber Music for Europe, a valued partner of our festival.

17.06 – HET UDANA KWINTET
Mozart, Dvorak, Zemlinsky en anderen
Célestine Wacquez | fluit
Tine Verhoeven | hobo
Alba Mayorga Rodrigo | klarinet
Rob Laethem | fagot
Jaso Enuset | hoorn
klassieke muziek in openbare ruimtes.
18.06 – HET DUO EURYDICE
Bach, Pergolesi, Mozart, Schubert en Bellini
Doris Brasseur | sopraan
Camille Ledocq | cello
gewaardeerde festivalpartner.

17.06 – LE QUINTETTE UDANA
Mozart, Dvorak, Zemlinsky et autres
Célestine Wacquez | flûte
Tine Verhoeven | hautbois
Alba Mayorga Rodrigo | clarinette
Rob Laethem | basson
Jaso Enuset | cor
Bach, Pergolesi, Mozart, Schubert, Bellini
Doris Brasseur | soprano
Camille Ledocq | violoncelle
