In deze nieuwe creatie keert Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker op haar stappen terug: naar de wortels van dans, de wortels van de popmuziek. “My walking is my dancing” is al sinds haar vroegste werk een van haar leidende principes: wandelen als primaire vorm van beweging, ons zo vertrouwd dat we er zelden bij stilstaan. Meskerem Mees, de jonge Belgische singer-songwriter met Ethiopische roots, tekent voor de muziek. Samen met Jean-Marie Aerts, geluidsarchitect van de legendarische Belgische rockformatie TC Matic rond Arno, componeert ze een reeks uitgeklede versies van ‘walking songs’. Choreografisch werkt De Keersmaeker zoals steeds van het organisch openplooien van eenvoudig bewegingsmateriaal naar ruimtelijke en fysieke complexiteit. Ze traceert de voetsporen van iconische wandelaars en verkent het politiek-subversieve potentieel van wandelen. Wandelen staat fundamenteel haaks op de hegemonie van functionaliteit en efficiëntie. Het is een inspanning die niets anders voortbrengt dan het verstrijken van de tijd en het doorkruisen van de ruimte. Bovenal stimuleert het gedachten en mijmeringen die aantonen hoe onze innerlijke wereld een landschap op zich is – een landschap dat vaak enkel te voet kan worden doorkruist.

Dans cette nouvelle création, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker revient sur ses pas et remonte aux origines de la danse et de celles de la musique pop. “My walking is my dancing” (“ma marche est ma danse”) est l’un des principes directeurs de la chorégraphe depuis toujours, la marche étant entendue comme une forme de mouvement primaire, tellement familier qu’on n’y réfléchit plus. La jeune autrice-compositrice belge d’origine éthiopienne Meskerem Mees signe la musique, des chansons de marche dépouillées et créées en collaboration avec Jean-Marie Aerts, du légendaire groupe rock belge TC Matic qui accompagnait Arno. Fidèle à sa pratique artistique, De Keersmaeker propose une chorégraphie organique : des mouvements simples se déploient dans un espace et une corporalité complexes. Elle retrace les pas de promeneur·euses emblématiques et interroge le potentiel politique et subversif de la marche. Marcher n'est pas seulement fonctionnel ou efficace : c’est un effort qui permet également de faire passer le temps, de parcourir l’espace et de dévoiler combien notre monde intérieur est un paysage en soi. Un paysage qui, souvent, ne peut s’arpenter qu’à pied.

In this new creation, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker retraces her steps, going back to the roots of dance, to the roots of pop music. “My walking is my dancing” has been one of her guiding principles ever since her earliest work – walking being a primary form of movement, so familiar to us that we seldom stop to think about it. Providing the music is the young Belgian singer-songwriter with Ethiopian roots, Meskerem Mees. Together with Jean-Marie Aerts, sound architect of TC Matic, the legendary 1980s Belgian alternative-rock formation centered around Arno, she has composed a series of stripped-down adaptations of ‘walking songs’. Choreographically, De Keersmaeker – as always – works from the organic unfolding of simple movement material to spatial and physical complexity. She traces the footsteps of iconic walkers and explores the politically subversive potential of walking. Walking is fundamentally at odds with the hegemony of functionality and efficiency. It is an endeavour that produces nothing but the passage of time and the traversal of space. Above all, it stimulates the emergence of thoughts and musings that reveal how our inner world is a landscape in itself – a landscape that can often only be traversed on foot.
