Paul Mogensen - 'n+1'
01juni 2023
-31juli 2023
Avenue Louise - Louizalaan 430, 1050 Bruxelles, Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, Belgique
Description
Mogensen’s progressional arrangements of geometric forms manifest in endless permutations. In a work from 2022, squares of diminishing size, rendered in Cadmium white, push against the borders of the Cadmium red–coated canvas as if guided by centrifugal force. In a composition of carmine pink on sat green, squares are magnified and clustered together, separated only by a sliver of negative space. For Mogensen, such two-colour compositions are a norm, but not a rule: in rare works of polychrome, colours are arranged in spectrum, advancing from cool to warm tones, as in a work from 2022. In each painting, Mogensen determines the height, width, and placement of the squares through elemental mathematics, particularly those deriving from Renaissance and Ancient Egyptian theorems. The works in this series are formally without title—an effort to remove all but what is needed from his paintings, leaving the relationship between colour and form as pure as possible. Preferring the stability of pre-mixed colours, Mogensen often works with paint straight from the tube. He contrasts smooth, opaque sections of paint in Cadmium orange, ultramarine, or alizarin crimson with the occasional use of ink wash and diluted acrylic.
Although working spontaneously, Mogensen nevertheless operates within a set of parameters: hard edges, a minimal palette, and predetermined logic. He never plans his works on paper, electing instead to compose directly on the canvas, explaining that “once you decide on the arithmetic and then you just make it, [the work] makes itself.” From this imperative, he has sustained decades of experimentation. In Mogensen’s practice, the ever-advancing, ever-diminishing progressional sequences of arithmetic and geometry is laid bare. Along with brushes, paint, and Stand oil, he works with the infinite, creating paintings in which order becomes elegance.
Paul Mogensen (b. 1941, Los Angeles) is a New York–based painter. In the late 1960s, he began exhibiting at Bykert Gallery in New York, where he was affiliated with other artists exploring arithmetic, minimal compositions, and serialities such as David Novros and Brice Marden. Distinct series can be identified within Mogensen’s practice, such as wall-based works consisting of multiple sections, shaped canvases, spectrum paintings, spirals, and the formulaic compositions of squares on single canvases. The resultant Morse code–like arrays call to mind the Universalist ideas of early twentieth-century Russian artists and poets admired by Mogensen such as Vladimir Mayakovsky, Alexander Rodchenko, and Vladimir Tatlin.
Mogensen’s work is represented in the collections of major museums in the United States and internationally, including at Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Switzerland, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, Fogg Museum, Cambridge, MA, High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA, The Menil Collection, Houston, TX, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY.

No area of Belgium has undergone such a radical process of transformation as the
North Sea coast. This transformation is a story of demolition, construction,
reconstruction in an effort to withstand the elements and respond to the
challenges of the economy, transport, fishing, and above all tourism.
Ecological, economic and industrial challenges meet here with the amazement or
admiration of visitors, the carefreeness of tourists, and the nostalgia of old
settlers. In the rhythm of the tides, everything is connected by an endless
tide, on a unique background where the border between the sea and the sky blurs.

GLUON presents Checkin’ Each Other Out, an artistic project by Belgian artist
Jerry Galle. The show is the first exhibition in a series showcasing the results
of Gluon’s residency collaboration and focuses on Galle’s most recent work,
developed during a residency at Belgian research centre Flanders Make, hosted by
Gluon. On Saturday 20 April, we will open the expo with a keynote by Darian
Meacham (technology philosopher) and panel discussion with Jerry Galle and Marc
Engels (COO Flanders Make). Welcome!
Checkin’ Each Other Out is a project that questions our understanding of
`intelligence’. Through interaction between humans, robots and living organisms,
Galle aims to explore alternative forms of intelligence to suggest a broader
spectrum of `smart’. Artificial intelligence (AI) constitutes one of these
emerging intelligences. At the same time, there is also growing recognition of
non-human intelligences in other living organisms such as octopuses and
mycelium, which exhibit unique forms of ‘intelligence’. To encourage a shift in
perspective, Galle suggests to embrace new approaches that recognise the
complexity of intelligence in all its forms. According to Galle, it is crucial
to consider robots and artificial intelligence not merely as subordinate
entities, but as autonomous subjects. Should we emphasize fostering
collaboration and promoting a sense of shared agency and mutual commitment? It
is essential to ask questions that explore subjective experiences; such as “What
is it like to be you?” rather than sticking to the comparative, binary question
“Are you like us?”. The installation by Belgian artist Jerry Galle, features a
collaborative robot (cobot), glass sculptures and an AI-ecosystem, embodies the
uncertain interplay among all living organisms and technology.

Checkin’ Each Other Out est un projet artistique qui interroge notre

Checkin’ Each Other Out is een artistiek project dat ons

Together with architect Sébastien Tripod and graphic & floral designer Deborah
Robbiano, choreographer and researcher Sara Manente is creating an installation
around the fertile ruin, based on fungal imagery. Having previously created
architectural fungi columns, they now aim to imagine an entire theatre in
collaboration with fungi and molds. The theatre turns into a compost in which
process equals products and things are not stable but rather in constant decay
and regrowth. A situation creating space for questions, metaphors and images
around contamination and finality. Is every encounter a form of contamination?
Is every performance a ruin that could bring fruit?Manente invites makers and
thinkers at a number of moments to activate the installation in different ways.
Clara Lévy's and Victor Guaita's concert takes place on 17 May and further
programming will be announced in the spring. Together with Pilar and VUB
Crosstalks, Kaaitheater presents this exhibition as part of A Series of
More-than-human Encounters. This project highlights different ways of being and
alternative forms of knowledge. With the forest, the mountains and the deep sea
as our thinking partners, we invite you to come and discover what is hidden
behind the horizon of human knowledge. Towards a Ruined Theater is also part of
Pilar's KunstxScience programme and VUB Crosstalks. • Sara Manente studied dance
and semiotics before coming to Brussels, where she works as an artist and
researcher. Her projects start from the images and matter of living cultures and

In her second solo exhibition at the Michèle Schoonjans Gallery, Amélie Scotta
presents a series of works exploring the notions of habitat and landscape
through colour and organic materials, brought to life through both drawing
(wood, bark, rock, etc.) and paper (mineral, vegetable, etc.).
In the Withdraw series, the artist works in two stages, superimposing two layers
of drawing and two types of perspective. The first layer, applied quickly and
randomly across the entire surface of the paper in coloured ink, can evoke the
atmospheric dimension of a landscape. The bright, unnatural colours and the
invisibility of the gesture give the impression of a luminous, radiant surface.
Here and there, accidents of material accentuate the effect of a printed image
that has been doctored, washed out and deteriorated. The second layer, drawn in
graphite, somehow constrains, obstructs or limits these infinite expanses.
Created slowly and meticulously in pencil, the motifs of trellis, wire netting
and other barriers reflect the artist's preoccupation with the question of
confinement. The idea of withdrawal, whether voluntary or not, has already been
evoked in earlier works, notably the Reclusoirs, sculptures inspired by the
small enclosed buildings in which penitents lived in the Middle Ages. But the
contrast between the immateriality of the coloured surface and the repetitive
pattern of the drawing also speaks to us of what is said beyond the edge of the
paper.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Nantes in 1983, Amélie Scotta is a visual artist and teacher based in
Brussels. She holds degrees in Design (HEAR Strasbourg, 2008) and Visual Arts
(ENSAV La Cambre, Brussels, 2016).
Since 2013, her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in Belgium (Le
Botanique, La Médiatine, Vanderborght Building, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts,
European Parliament, etc.) and abroad (Villa Méditerranée in Marseille, Arabic
Culture House in Berlin, Matadero in Madrid, as well as Magasins Généraux,
Palais de Tokyo and Carreau du Temple in Paris). She has also held residencies
at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris,
the Moonens Foundation and the Boghossian Foundation in Brussels. She is the
winner of the Prix international de la Ville de Tournai in 2021, the Prix Cocof
and the Prix Carré sur Seine in 2020.
From the Jeddah Tower to the disused factories of Roubaix, from the Rio stadium
to the Versailles of the people, from medieval recluses to the scaffolding of
Brussels, it is in an intuitive way that the artist questions architecture in
all its forms. Approached primarily through drawing, but also through sculpture
and photography, construction allows her to speak of the human being, the one
who both inhabits and builds.
In more recent works, Amélie Scotta takes a more sensorial approach to landscape
and habitat, working with colour and materials. She addresses the issue of
withdrawal, a position in relation to the world that can provide protection,
confinement or liberation. Her relationship with urban planning is also leading
her increasingly towards projects in the public space.

arts visuels (ENSAV La Cambre, Bruxelles, 2016).
