Cabaret
17december 2022
Cullinanplein 1, 1074 JN Amsterdam, Pays-Bas
Description
Cabaret – the legendary show that changed musical theatre forever. Set in pre-World War II Berlin, it’s a tale of decadence, self-discovery and romance, set against the rise of fascism. The current West End production is currently London’s hottest ticket. It won 7 Olivier awards including best actor for both Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley. The script is a substantial update of the original 1966 production and even of the 1972 film version, which won 8 Oscars.
With songs like Willkommen, Money Money, Tomorrow Belongs to Me and the eponymous Cabaret, its score is packed with memorable numbers and witty, satirical lyrics.
This production very much takes its inspiration from the original Berlin books by Christopher Isherwood. As a young gay writer, invited there by literati such as Auden and Spender, he finally found the sexual liberation he was denied in Great Britain. His observations led to his creating extraordinary characters, like Sally Bowles, and documenting the period of German dictatorship that led to the Holocaust. In these times of Putin and populism, it retains every shred of its relevance.
QETC’s production is set to be the pinnacle of their 20th anniversary year.
