Much medieval and Renaissance music has, sadly, been handed down anonymously, although there is of course a fascinating musical personality behind each anonymous person. Unfortunately, printers were not always careful to include a composer's name, so many compositions remain stuck in libraries. A pity, because the often high, unique and surprising quality of these works, could just as well have been by, say, Brumel, Josquin or Lassus. In the acoustics of the cathedral, be moved by some unknown masses, chansons, frottolas, motets and madrigals floating in a haze of unknown perfume.

Audience favourite Sergey Khachatryan, winner of the 2005 Queen Elisabeth Competition, returns to Belgium for a performance of Max Bruch's famous First Violin Concerto. The Tatar-born Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, now 92, grew up under Stalin, received an encouraging speech from Shostakovich at her composition final exam in Moscow and has been living as a kind of hermit near Hamburg since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The title of her orchestral composition Das Gastmahl während der Pest (2006) refers to Pushkin’s drama of the same name. When Sergei Prokofiev began writing his Romeo and Juliet in 1934, he could not have known how difficult it would be to stage the ballet. As the Soviet authorities were difficult and theatres repeatedly failed him, Prokofiev decided after several years to compile the musical highlights of the more than two-hour score into three symphonic suites.
Flagey, ReMuA, Brussels Philharmonic € 8 Nederlands During these interactive concerts the children will playfully get to know the instruments of the orchestra. Prior to the concert in the concert hall, the animators come to the classroom to teach the children about the music while singing, clapping and stamping. Flagey, ReMuA, Brussels Philharmonic € 8*
Radiant trumpets and jubilant soloists! Easter is all about commemorating the suffering and death of Christ, but in Bach's time, Easter Sunday resonated with joyful notes. Alongside his renowned passions, Bach composed an Italian-style Easter oratorio, omitting chorales and an evangelist. For nearly 25 years, he refined his Oster-Oratorium, which debuted on Easter Sunday in 1725. The Oster-Oratorium is a resplendent celebration of Easter, where radiant trumpets take the lead and soloists sing out their joy with gusto: a tribute to new beginnings, longer days, and nature's awakening. The piece's pastoral roots shine through in instruments that frolic like spirited young colts, brimming with hope and vitality. Flagey, Vlaams Radiokoor € 41 > € 5
Google 'Triple Concerto' and only the original work by Beethoven will show up in your search results. Less well known is that none other than Johann Sebastian Bach also wrote a concerto for three solo instruments. Les Muffati performs the Triple Concerto for traverso, violin and harpsichord of this baroque star. The captivating Bertrand Cuiller, is the primus inter pares on the harpsichord, but that does not prevent the other two excellent soloists, Frank Theuns and Sophie Gent, from claiming their place in a playful, interwoven imitative counterpoint. In addition, the Brussels Baroque Orchestra provides a fresh take on Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 and the Suite in B minor.
Kristian Bezuidenhout and Jean-Guihen Queyras have one thing in common: their passion for authentic interpretation and for the rediscovery of, at times, long-forgotten pieces. Equally at home on the piano and the harpsichord, Bezuidenhout is also a virtuoso on the fortepiano, the precursor of our modern piano. It is on this instrument that he will play in this concert dedicated entirely to the works for cello and piano by Felix Mendelssohn. Cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras is an inquisitive spirit who moves from the baroque repertoire to contemporary music. The meeting of these two exceptional musicians will allow us to rediscover Mendelssohn's works, in a palette of colours and intensities very close to that which the composer himself experienced at the beginning of the 19th century.
Babies deserve a good concert too! The Concertos para Bebés (Concerts for babies) are aimed at young children as well as the audience of tomorrow. Since their creation in Leiria (Portugal) in 1998, these events have distinguished themselves from other concerts for young audiences by the respect and dedication they show to babies, parents, and grandparents. Monteverdi, Bach, and Mozart are just a few of the guests in a very wide-ranging programme that includes classical music, jazz, traditional Portuguese music, and other music from the rest of the world. Electronic music and improvisations are also on the agenda to delight parents and their little ones.
What makes the sound of a cello so beautiful and special? Is it the resemblance to the human voice? The warm tone? The soft, dark sound character? This concert honours one of the most expressive instruments, played here by young musician Edward Luengo, who won first prize at the Buchet International Cello Competition at the Brussels Cello Festival in 2022. With his Sonata in C for Cello and Piano Op. 65, Benjamin Britten pays tribute to one of the world’s most illustrious cellists: Mstislav Rostropovich. In turn, the composition by Andrea Casarrubios, herself a cellist, is an intense and elegiac tribute to healthcare workers during the pandemic. And finally, there is Frédéric Chopin’s Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 65, the last work published during his lifetime.
The Lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah occupy a prominent place in the French musical works of the 18th century. As theatres are closed during Holy Week, composers draw a highly expressive material from this biblical text, which offers virtuoso opera singers a most exhilarating and sacred playground. François Couperin made history with his famous triptych of Leçons de Ténèbres. Among his successors, the Brussels residents Joseph-Hector Fiocco and Charles-Joseph Van Helmont combined the inspiration infused by Couperin with their language steeped in Italian influences. With a most seductive lyricism, the luminous soprano voice contrasts with the deep colours of the accompaniment from which the complaint of the solo cello often stands out.
Formed in the aftermath of the Second World War, the Philharmonia Orchestra embodies the values of freedom-loving artists and boasts one of the richest musical histories of the 20th century. Launched by conductors such as Toscanini and Furtwängler, it quickly established itself among the world's best. For its appearance in Brussels under the baton of the young Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, the orchestra presents a spectacular programme in two parts. Sergey Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 is undoubtedly one of the finest examples of literature for piano and orchestra. Bruce Liu, the flamboyant winner of the 2021 Chopin Competition, will deliver a highly anticipated version. In the second half, Rouvali treats us to Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, one of the Russian composer's most famous, composed at the crucial turning point of Stalin's death.
