19:00A workshop on interpreting and analyzing participatory performances made by non-professional performers during co-creation projects. This workshop is organized in collaboration with The School of Two-Sided Integration (Sara Oklobdzija Raes). The workshop seeks insights about the artistic normative standards we use and the way spectators can look at these performances. When people go to the opera, there is the opportunity to listen to an introduction to understand the opera piece. This workshop/discursive session functions in the same way. EN spoken20:00The work (try-out) of two fledgling performances developed in Globe Aroma’s workplace.
This ambitious, two-part production brings together musical highlights from the sixteen first operas of Giuseppe Verdi to tell a new story. We meet three friends during two key years of their lives: the protest years after May 1968 and a reunion forty years later. Separated by time but linked by their shared past, these friends take stock of what remains of the unrest, violence and idealism of their youthful years, and try to uncover the truth behind an unsolved mystery. The project unfolds over the course of two separate opera performances, Rivoluzione and Nostalgia. With compelling arias, emblematic overtures and such memorable choral parts as ‘Va, pensiero’ (Nabucco), these performances will take you to the heart of Verdi’s musical genius. Rivoluzione (Part I) Late 1960s. Growing social tensions are spreading across Europe. Three young men, Carlo, Lorenzo and Giuseppe, find themselves involved in a protest movement. All three gravitate towards Laura, a committed activist who is studying violin. As the revolution gradually turns into a physical confrontation with the authorities, personal and emotional conflicts break out between members of the group and Laura's ideal of peaceful resistance is overtaken by reality. How far will she go for her beliefs?  Nostalgia (Part II) Late 2000s. A vernissage in a plush art gallery. Among the hand-picked guests, Carlo, Giuseppe and Lorenzo, three old friends, meet again after many years. Within the installation on display, a documentary showing footage of their revolutionary youth is being screened. Each of them seems to remember that time differently, but they do share one feeling: the shadow of Laura, who disappeared without a trace forty years earlier, still looms over them …  Are you under 30? Then attend this opera's on the 'Young Opera' nights (29.3.2024 and 5.4.2024) and enjoy a free reception and exclusive introduction. Rivoluzione (Partie I) :   Fin des années 1960. (Macbeth). Rivoluzione (Part I): Eind jaren 1960. Nostalgia (Part II): Eind jaren 2000.
On 25 December 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope was launched. This infrared telescope is the biggest and most sophisticated space telescope ever, which allows scientists to look deep into the universe and into the past. It is used among others to seek out the ‘cosmic dawn’: the light of the very first stars, which came into being shortly after the birth of our universe. But more than the voyage of discovery the telescope makes, Meirhaeghe is fascinated by the capability of the human mind to rise above itself and the universe. The vast endlessness of the universe engulfs us; science is constantly seeking, but our imagination is absolute. His companion on this trip past the borders of our body and our time is the Italian composer Caterina Barbieri. She creates electronic music with a ‘transformative and mind-enhancing’ potential. To the hypnotic tones of Fantas (part of her masterful 2019 album Ecstatic Computation), the performers, dancers and singers surrender to the inexplicable and inexpressible. Shelly Shonk Fiffit will be an intense and ecstatic visual and musical trip, through both our inner worlds and the far corners of the cosmos. Fiffit!

After Annie Ernaux in March 2023, La Monnaie and international house of literature Passa Porta are delighted to welcome another Nobel Prize Winner in Literature, Abdulrazak Gurnah. Abdulrazak Gurnah was born in 1948 in Zanzibar, Tanzania. In 1967 he fled to the UK, where he taught English and postcolonial literature at the University of Kent. In his impressive and widely acclaimed oeuvre of essays, short stories and novels, he managed to give a voice to those who have been neglected by history. When awarding him the highest literary distinction, the Nobel Prize Committee called him ‘one of the world’s most prominent postcolonial writers. He has explored, in a penetrating manner and with great compassion, the consequences of colonialism in East Africa and its effects on the lives of uprooted and migrating people’. As such, the themes of his work fit seamlessly with the new opera creation Ali, the true story of a twelve-year old boy who has to risk the deadly dangerous migration route to Europe. Notable works by Abdulrazak Gurnah include Paradise (1994), By the Sea (2001) and Desertion (2005). His latest novel, Afterlives (2020), is a work of historical fiction. The full programme of this evening, with a dash of Brussels, will be announced later. Part of the proceeds will go to ICORN, a network of more than seventy cities around the world, including Brussels, that offer shelter to writers at risk.
François Gremaud has undertaken to revisit three great tragic female figures of the classical performing arts: Phèdre (theatre), Giselle (ballet) and Carmen (opera). Carmen, one of the most famous opéras comiques, is about a rebellious and seductive young bohemian woman who is tragically murdered by her former lover. In keeping with his unique way of turning a lesson into an art form, the author/director offers us a ‘reduction’ of Bizet’s work, tailor-made for a single performer: Rosemary Standley, the singer of the group Moriarty, among others. On stage she will share with us not only the story of Carmen, but also the musical and textual aesthetics of this opera, the historical context of its creation.  Despite the tragic outcome of the story, there will be joy and wonder. These are emotions that the performing arts can release, arts which, against all odds, never cease to celebrate the profound happiness of being in the world.
The Lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah occupy a prominent place in the French musical works of the 18th century. As theatres are closed during Holy Week, composers draw a highly expressive material from this biblical text, which offers virtuoso opera singers a most exhilarating and sacred playground. François Couperin made history with his famous triptych of Leçons de Ténèbres. Among his successors, the Brussels residents Joseph-Hector Fiocco and Charles-Joseph Van Helmont combined the inspiration infused by Couperin with their language steeped in Italian influences. With a most seductive lyricism, the luminous soprano voice contrasts with the deep colours of the accompaniment from which the complaint of the solo cello often stands out.
