In presence of Kim Jaehwan, Director of the Korean Cultural Center, Delphine Dumont, Director of the Photo Brussels Festival, SEOK Jaehyun, Curator of the exhibition and all participating artists : AHN Jun, BAE Chan-hyo, CHOI Young-kwi, JEONG Yun-soon, and LEE Jee-young

We have chosen 'self-portraiture' as the main theme of this year’s photography exhibition at the Korean Cultural Center.

'Self-portraiture', a form of self-reflective art in which the gaze of the artist is directed inward toward their inner self or ego rather than outward toward external objects, has been continuously examined throughout history.

The five participating Korean photographers, AHN Jun, BAE Chan-hyo, CHOI Young-kwi, JEONG Yun-soon, and LEE Jee-young, each partake in this tradition of introspection while walking different paths to explore their inner self.

No area of Belgium has undergone such a radical process of transformation as the North Sea coast. This transformation is a story of demolition, construction, reconstruction in an effort to withstand the elements and respond to the challenges of the economy, transport, fishing, and above all tourism. Ecological, economic and industrial challenges meet here with the amazement or admiration of visitors, the carefreeness of tourists, and the nostalgia of old settlers. L’humanité, dans toute sa splendeur et sa complexité, est un chef-d’œuvre d’imperfections qui se tissent harmonieusement pour former une perfection singulière. C’est dans la nature même de l’Homme d’être imparfait, de porter en lui des fissures et des failles qui, loin d’être des défauts, sont les fils invisibles tissant la trame de sa grandeur. L’ambition de cette exposition est dans un premier temps de rendre hommage à des blessures qui ont tracées la vie de ces différents portraits, tout en faisant un parallèle avec le Kintsugi. Cet art japonais ancestral qui invite à réparer un objet cassé en soulignant ses cicatrices de poudre d’or, au lieu de les cacher. Réparé, consolidé, embelli, il porte fièrement ses blessures, et il devient. Paradoxalement d’autant plus précieux qu’il a été brisé… En fin de compte, c’est la fragilité de l’humanité qui la rend riche et éternellement fascinante. Les imperfections ne sont pas des obstacles à la perfection, mais plutôt les éléments qui la définissent. C’est dans la danse délicate entre lumière et ombre que l’Homme trouve sa véritable splendeur, créant un chef-d’œuvre toujours en évolution, toujours inachevé, mais infiniment inestimable. D’origine marocaine et kabyle, Hinde Kebbache est née et a grandi à Bruxelles. Petite, elle collectionnait de nombreux souvenirs : tickets de concerts, de métros, objets trouvés… qui lui rappelaient un moment précis. Cet attrait nostalgique de sa personnalité se traduit aujourd’hui à travers sa photographie ; cet art qui capture de manière immuable des instants uniques dans le temps.

********** English ********** GLUON presents Checkin’ Each Other Out, an artistic project by Belgian artist Jerry Galle. The show is the first exhibition in a series showcasing the results of Gluon’s residency collaboration and focuses on Galle’s most recent work, developed during a residency at Belgian research centre Flanders Make, hosted by Gluon. On Saturday 20 April, we will open the expo with a keynote by Darian Meacham (technology philosopher) and panel discussion with Jerry Galle and Marc Engels (COO Flanders Make). Welcome! Checkin’ Each Other Out is a project that questions our understanding of `intelligence’. Through interaction between humans, robots and living organisms, Galle aims to explore alternative forms of intelligence to suggest a broader spectrum of `smart’. Artificial intelligence (AI) constitutes one of these emerging intelligences. At the same time, there is also growing recognition of non-human intelligences in other living organisms such as octopuses and mycelium, which exhibit unique forms of ‘intelligence’. To encourage a shift in perspective, Galle suggests to embrace new approaches that recognise the complexity of intelligence in all its forms. According to Galle, it is crucial to consider robots and artificial intelligence not merely as subordinate entities, but as autonomous subjects. Should we emphasize fostering collaboration and promoting a sense of shared agency and mutual commitment? It is essential to ask questions that explore subjective experiences; such as “What is it like to be you?” rather than sticking to the comparative, binary question “Are you like us?”. The installation by Belgian artist Jerry Galle, features a collaborative robot (cobot), glass sculptures and an AI-ecosystem, embodies the uncertain interplay among all living organisms and technology.
