Rembrandt Revival
29september 2022
Zwanenburgwal 7, 1011 NR Amsterdam, Netherlands
Description
Manet, Morisot, Whistler, and Cassatt — are just a few famous painters who took inspiration from Rembrandt and started making etchings themselves. Between 1850 and 1940, they ensured an international revival of the art of etching: the Etching Revival. The Etching Revival was therefore also a Rembrandt Revival. From 11 June, dozens of highlights from this collection can be seen in the Rembrandt Revival exhibition. In the audio tour, Neeke Fraenkel-Schoorl takes you personally along with some of her favourites. Museum Het Rembrandthuis will also be organising inspiring activities related to Rembrandt Revival, including etching workshops and a Rembrandt live talk show and podcast.
Watch and compare
The Rembrandt House Museum recently received a generous donation of international etchings from collector Neeke Fraenkel-Schoorl. The works of art are bursting with experimentation and innovation, challenging compositions and surprising techniques. Rembrandt was an important example for these artists.
The international artists of the Etching Revival often referred to Rembrandt in their work. The exhibition pairs their work with his etchings – inviting us to look and compare. Rembrandt's Reading Girl, for example, returns regularly. But the print that has been most imitated is probably The Three Trees. This etching was immensely popular in the 19th century and was regularly exhibited in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. So many artists knew the etching well and were inspired by it, especially by the sky and the threatening clouds.
Special attention to female artists
The exhibition also shows the lust for innovation and the experimentation of various artists. Extreme light-dark contrast, the use of various techniques such as aquatint and roulette, and even an artist who modified his paper by soaking it in petrol. Special attention is paid to the group of female artists who, from the 19th century, had the opportunity to become professional artists. Even then, women still encountered a lot of opposition. Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Käthe Kollwitz and some of their contemporaries nevertheless managed to secure a place in the art world and started making prints.
The donation of Neeke Fraenkel-Schoorl
Neeke Fraenkel-Schoorl (1942) collected prints from an early age. During her art history studies she fell in love with printmaking and after that she worked as an expert graphics expert at Sotheby's. Out of her particular interest in Whistler's prints, she concentrated on the Etching Revival. She recently donated her collection of nearly 400 prints and more than 200 pieces of graphics in books and magazines from the period 1850-1940 to Museum Het Rembrandthuis. Printmaking is central to the museum's collection, but this period has been scarcely represented until now.
