No one flees for fun. Ali is 12 years old when he leaves Somalia. He travels the
dangerous road from the Horn of Africa to the heart of Europe. Along the way,
friendships are made despite the hardships and hope is found amidst the horror.
Ali has to cross several countries, a desert and the Mediterranean along with
hundreds of migrants seeking a better future. He arrives at the Brussels South
railway station in 2019, alone, without knowing a word of French or Dutch. He is
14 years old …
This incredible epic is the true story of Ali Abdi Omar, adapted for the opera
in collaboration with Ali himself. This moving creation reconstructs all the
stages of his journey. A sensory experience where electronic music, voice,
string and wind instruments, percussion and dance pay a vibrant tribute to the
resilience of a young boy forced, like so many others, to leave his family and
home in order to survive.

Nul ne fuit par plaisir. Ali a douze ans quand il quitte la Somalie. Il emprunte
la dangereuse route qui mène de la Corne de l’Afrique au cœur de l’Europe. En
chemin, des amitiés se lient malgré les épreuves, l’espoir côtoie l’horreur. Il
lui faut traverser plusieurs pays, un désert et la Méditerranée, au milieu de
centaines de migrants en quête d’un avenir meilleur. Quand il arrive, seul, à la
gare de Bruxelles-Midi en 2019, ne connaissant pas un mot de français ni de
néerlandais, il a quatorze ans…
Cette épopée est l’histoire vraie d’Ali Abdi Omar, adaptée en opéra par les
compositeurs Grey Filastine, Walid Ben Selim et Brent Arnold, et par le metteur
en scène Ricard Soler Mallol. Réalisée en collaboration avec Ali lui-même, cette
création reconstruit avec émotion toutes les étapes de son voyage. Une
expérience sensorielle où musique électronique, voix, instruments à cordes et à
vents, percussions et danse rendent un vibrant hommage à la résilience d’un
jeune garçon forcé, comme tant d’autres, de quitter sa famille et son foyer pour
survivre.

Niemand slaat voor zijn plezier op de vlucht. Ali is twaalf als hij uit Somalië
vertrekt en de gevaarlijke reis van de Hoorn van Afrika tot hartje Europa
aanvat. Hij doorkruist een hele reeks landen, de woestijn en de Middellandse
Zee, tussen honderden migranten die ook op zoek zijn naar een betere toekomst.
Onderweg smeedt hij, ondanks de beproevingen, vriendschappen en vindt hij te
midden van de verschrikking ook hoop. Hij komt in 2019 aan in het station
Brussel-Zuid, helemaal alleen, zonder een woord Frans of Nederlands te kunnen.
Hij is dan veertien...
Het waargebeurde verhaal van Ali Abdi Omar komt nu tot leven in een nieuwe
opera, gecreëerd in nauwe samenwerking met Ali zelf. Een zintuiglijke ervaring
waarin elektronische muziek, stem, snaar- en blaasinstrumenten, percussie en
dans een aangrijpend eerbetoon brengen aan de veerkracht van een tiener die,
zoals zovele lotgenoten, zijn familie en zijn thuis moest achterlaten om te
overleven.

La régisseuse et metteuse en scène de théâtre Lisaboa Houbrechts écrit et met en scène une épopée familiale qui s'étend sur trois générations. Elle se penche sur l'époque de ses grands-parents, de ses parents et de sa propre génération. Elle cherche à déterminer comment l’infime est enchevêtré dans le grand, l'intime dans le politique et le passé dans le présent. Au cœur de ce récit, une jeune fille de douze ans qui se trouve en bout de chaîne d'une longue histoire et qui plonge dans les traumatismes occultés du passé.Houbrechts développe l'histoire sous la forme d'une trilogie, un grand récit oscillant entre théâtre et opéra. La première partie, Vake Poes ; of hoe God verdween, raconte l'histoire d'un schisme familial au cours duquel Vake Poes et son fils renoncent à leur foi et clouent Jésus sur la croix. Ceci au grand désespoir de Moeke Poes qui souhaite que sa famille conserve pureté et piété dans un monde qui devient de plus en plus laïc dans les années 1960.• Lisaboa Houbrechts est une écrivaine et metteuse en scène, et crée des œuvres à la croisée de l'art visuel, de l'opéra et du théâtre de texte. Elle a déjà joué Hamlet au Kaaitheater avec Kuiperskaai, un collectif de jeunes créateur·ices de Bruxelles. Elle est devenue récemment l'un des créatrices régulières de Toneelhuis.

Ze blikt terug op het tijdsgewricht van haar grootouders, haar ouders en haar eigen generatie. Ze gaat op zoek naar hoe het kleine met het grote, het intieme met het politieke en het verleden met het heden is verweven. Centraal staat een meisje van twaalf jaar dat aan het eind van een lange geschiedenis staat en in de verborgen trauma’s van het verleden duikt. In de vorm van een trilogie werkt Houbrechts het verhaal uit, tot een groots opgezette vertelling tussen theater en opera. Het eerste deel Vake Poes; of hoe God verdween, vertelt het verhaal van een familiale zenuwinzinking waarbij Vake Poes en zijn zoon hun geloof opofferen en Jezus aan het Kruis nagelen. Dit tot grote wanhoop van Moeke Poes die haar familie vroom en rein wil houden in een wereld die in de jaren ’60 steeds seculierder wordt. • Lisaboa Houbrechts is schrijver en regisseur en maakt werk op het snijvlak van beeldende kunst, opera en teksttheater. Eerder stond ze samen met Kuiperskaai – een collectief van jonge Brusselse makers – in het Kaaitheater met de voorstelling Hamlet. Sinds kort is ze een van de vaste makers van Toneelhuis.

Director and theatre maker Lisaboa Houbrechts writes and stages a family epic that spans three generations. She takes a retrospective look at the world of her grandparents, her parents and of her own generation. She explores how the small is intertwined with the large, the intimate with the political, and the past with the present. At the centre is a twelve-year-old girl who has come to the end of a long history and delves into the hidden traumas of the past.Houbrechts develops the story into a grand narrative between theatre and opera by adapting the form of a trilogy. The first part, Vake Poes; of hoe God verdween, tells the story of a family breakdown in which Vake Poes and his son sacrifice their faith and nail Jesus to the Cross. This to the despair of Moeke Poes who wants to keep her family pious and pure in a 1960s world that is becoming more and more secular.• Lisaboa Houbrechts is a writer and director and creates work at the intersection of visual art, opera and text theatre. She has already performed Hamlet at Kaaitheater together with Kuiperskaai - a collective of young Brussels makers. She recently became one of Toneelhuis' regular creators.
