No one flees for fun. Ali is 12 years old when he leaves Somalia. He travels the
dangerous road from the Horn of Africa to the heart of Europe. Along the way,
friendships are made despite the hardships and hope is found amidst the horror.
Ali has to cross several countries, a desert and the Mediterranean along with
hundreds of migrants seeking a better future. He arrives at the Brussels South
railway station in 2019, alone, without knowing a word of French or Dutch. He is
14 years old …
This incredible epic is the true story of Ali Abdi Omar, adapted for the opera
in collaboration with Ali himself. This moving creation reconstructs all the
stages of his journey. A sensory experience where electronic music, voice,
string and wind instruments, percussion and dance pay a vibrant tribute to the
resilience of a young boy forced, like so many others, to leave his family and
home in order to survive.

survivre.

When Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky wrote those words to his brother Modest in 1890, he didn’t know yet that history would prove him right. He composed The Queen of Spades, for which his brother wrote the libretto, in a feverish burst of creative energy. Unlike in the work of the same name by Pushkin, Hermann in the opera is torn between his feelings for Lisa and a destructive idée fixe. The delusions of card games, a consuming passion and the menace of fate are among the elements that Tchaikovsky uses to depict poetic moments that contrast with extravagant scenes set in high society. Do the fears and neuroses of the characters in The Queen of Spades have a particular resonance with our age? This is what the director David Marton, who previously staged Capriccio at La Monnaie, will set out to explore. Nathalie Stutzmann performed in our recital series in 2015; this will be her first time conducting at La Monnaie.

Nothing is what it seems at the old English country house Bly. When a new
governess takes up her position, she is told never to leave the children alone!
The shocking confrontation with the ghosts of her predecessor and a certain
Peter Quint soon makes it clear to her why. As protecting the children becomes
increasingly difficult, disturbing questions arise: What horrible acts took
place before her arrival? How innocent are the children? And are you really
seeing what’s before your eyes?
Drawing on Henry James’s intriguing ghost story, Benjamin Britten composed a
psychological thriller in chamber opera format with The Turn of the Screw.
Director Andrea Breth keeps the mystery intact, turning House Bly into a
labyrinth in which the characters are not the only ones to lose themselves.
Together with conductor Antonio Méndez, she will turn the screw on your
imagination as far as it goes…
Are you under 30? Then attend this opera on the Young Opera Night (10.5.2024)

In death you will find fulfilment, in your neighbour perhaps the truth behind
love. Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs
– posthumous gems by two of the greatest song composers if the twentieth century
– sing, each in their own way, about the big questions of life.
In 1948, when the rubble of the world conflagration was still smouldering,
Strauss set to music three poems by Hermann Hesse and one by Joseph von
Eichendorff for his swan song. These are lieder that, with their dreamy
lyricism, find comfort in the irrevocable cyclicity of nature and reassure us:
what if death brings peace?
The melancholy nature of Strauss’s late romanticism is at odds with the wit and
charm of Benjamin Britten’s pre-war Cabaret Songs. Based on poems by his good
friend W.H. Auden, ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ and
‘Calypso’ reveal, with their spirited, jazzy undertones, a very different facet
of the composer whose opera The Turn of the Screw we are also performing this
season.
After unforgettable appearances in Les Huguenots and Bastarda, among others,
soprano Lenneke Ruiten will now sing for the first time a recital on our stage.
Accompanied at the piano by Thom Janssen, she will present a richly filled
evening full of contrasts that will immerse you completely in the poetry of
song.

« Tell
me the Truth About Love », « Funeral Blues », « Johnny » et « Calypso », toutes

Benjamin Brittens vooroorlogse Cabaret Songs. ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’,

"It may be a play, but it starts out like a film. The heart of the work is in
the cinema," Christiane Jatahy says of the play."It is through cinema that we
arrive on the stage.”
This story is 3000 years old, but it is replayed every day in cinema, but also
in Homer's ‘Odyssey.’ All over the world, people cross borders in search of
asylum or a home.
The film travels through Jenin, Palestine, refugee camps in Lebanon and Greece,
downtown Johannesburg, the Amazon rainforest and ends up in Rio de Janeiro. The
context of the filming may be documentary, but the whole thing is primarily
fiction. The actors in these communities take Homer's verses to speak about
their reality. The actors are manifestations of Odysseus, Penelope and
Telemachus, they draw a straight line from ancient Greek characters to each of
us, present, in the theatre.
For some people in exile or in countries at war, only the present exists, the
past is already too far away or almost destroyed, and the future is unthinkable.
Only the time of waiting remains. A present that overflows.
• Born in Rio de Janeiro, Christiane Jatahy has degrees in theatre and
journalism, and a Masters degree in art and philosophy. In January 2022,
Christiane Jatahy was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for her
entire theatrical work. Created in 2020, ‘Le présent qui déborde’, was filmed
in Palestine, Lebanon, South Africa, Greece and the Amazon. The film is in
dialogue with theatre and mixes fiction with real stories of refugee artists.
This production by Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles has been performed at the
Avignon Festival and has toured in Europe, Asia and the United States.

overloopt.

volledige artistieke theateroeuvre. The Overflowing Present', gemaakt in 2020,

Down to Under investigates the city’s influence on the human body. In view of
video gaming, internet and Generation Z culture, the urban space works as an
algorithm, a playground, a battleground, a living space, a field of ever-flowing
stimuli as well as a confinement.
In this environment, the performing body enacts physicalities and gestures

while reducing its height. As it is not integral with the main ceiling it
covers, it can take any shape you choose.
Faux Plafond reverses the function of the object, just as children do when
building ephemeral huts. A reversible construction stretches out just above the
bodies present. Faux Plafond draws attention to the materiality of the
architectures that surround us in a world where physical spaces tend to become
virtualised.

Camille Bleker and Luna Pittau spend much of their time observing the ceilings
that cover their bodies. Together, they create performances. Luna Pittau,
initially trained in printmaking and then in Visual Arts (IUAV, Venice), went on
to work in the field of re-use. Her practice was soon enriched by textile
creations involving the sequence of repetitive gestures, whose performative
dimension outweighs the final result. Her work tells the story of inhabited
spaces and documents our relationship with place, time and memory.
Camille Bleker, architect, author and performer, has collaborated on
deconstruction and recycling projects. The question of objects and their
function then became a major preoccupation. In her work, which takes the form of
a "laboratory" practice combining language and performative experimentation, she
examines the relationships of our bodies and spaces to inanimate objects.
