Both cinematic and political, it is a film born of the sexual revolution of the late 1960s, when heterosexual and homosexual monogamy alike were strongly criticised. A porno-chic musical comedy, this film echoes the American horror cinema of the 70s, where violence is used to illustrate a general malaise and lack of confidence in the major institutions of American society. The Rocky Horror Picture Show parodies the institutions of marriage and the family with a discreet sense of paranoia that haunts the narrative.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show est une comédie horrifique, elle-même adaptée de la comédie musicale de Richard O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Show, créée à Londres en 1973.
Le film est au croisement du fantastique, de la science-fiction, de la parodie du film d’horreur et de série B, dans une ambiance de dessin animé et d’opéra rock kitsch. Le tout baigne dans une atmosphère saturée de sexualité exacerbée. Il raconte l’aventure d’un couple bien rangé dont la voiture tombe en panne lors d’une nuit d’orage. Iels se réfugient alors dans le mystérieux château du Dr Frank-N-Furter, un transsexuel transylvanien. Là, les occupants se livrent à la débauche sous l’œil mi-effrayé, mi-concupiscent de nos deux perdu·es. Véritable icône transgressive, figure dionysiaque et androgyne, Frank y fait l’apologie d’un plaisir sexuel librement partagé dans des apparitions spectaculaires.
Sous les dehors extravagants de la parodie loufoque et glam-rock, l’esprit du Rocky Horror Picture Show est donc plus sérieux qu’il n’y paraît, à la fois cinéphile et politique. Il s’agit bien d’un film issu de la révolution sexuelle de la fin des années soixante, où la monogamie hétérosexuelle, mais aussi homosexuelle, est fortement critiquée. Comédie musicale porno-chic, ce film s’inscrit aussi dans la continuité du cinéma d’horreur américain des seventies où la violence est avant tout l’expression d’un malaise, d’une crise de confiance à l’égard des grandes institutions de la société américaine. Le mariage mais aussi la famille se voit ici parodiées, avec un sentiment discret de paranoïa qui hante le récit.
