Description
The exhibition Tussen Gaasp & Gracht tells stories about the age-old and contemporary relationship between the current Amsterdam city districts Zuidoost and Centrum. At Imagine IC and Museum Van Loon, Tussen Gaasp & Gracht presents stories from the two city districts, in which the city of Amsterdam is not viewed from the center with Southeast as its periphery, but as two urban centers with their own dynamics and developments that interact with each other. interact, influence each other and make a city together. On display at Museum van Loon.
An ancient and contemporary union
One of the symbols of the relationship between Southeast and Center is the Langerlust farm on the Gaasperplas, which will be used as a catering and meeting place in Southeast until 2019. It was the farm of the Van Loon family for about a century and a half, until ownership was transferred to the municipality of Amsterdam at the end of the 1970s.
Langerlust is an illustration of how Amsterdam Southeast and Amsterdam Center have a long relationship with each other. In the 17th and 18th centuries , wealthy Amsterdammers built country estates in the area; the area has also played an important role as an agricultural area – with the accompanying food supply to the canal belt.
Farm Langerlust is one of the few remaining homesteads of that time. The construction of the De Bijlmermeer residential area started in the 20th century and has grown into what is now the Amsterdam Zuidoost district. Also at the moment, this time partly due to a tight housing market and gentrification, Amsterdam Southeast is a popular place. Tussen Gaasp & Gracht tells about these long lines of development and unveils a story about (contemporary) heritage in a rapidly changing city.
Between Gaasp and Gracht
At Museum Van Loon on Keizersgracht, the exhibition focuses on urban transformation: how have both areas developed over the centuries in relation to each other? Various stories – eg about country estates, the struggle against the water and the role of the tenant – illustrate the urban development.
OSCAM x MUSEUM VAN LOON, on view from 4 August, OSCAM invites artists to show work in Museum Van Loon that touches on the subjects in the exhibition.
At Imagine IC in the Bijlmer, a view is taken of the culinary heritage from the contemporary showcase of Zuidoost. From Heron to Pom on the menu. Recipes from then, with local products complemented with scents from abroad, to create meals inspired by recipes from the courts of France and England.
And the kitchens in Southeast where locally harvested with flavors from near and far come together effortlessly to create new dishes. The exhibition takes a look behind the scenes of Mavis Hofwijk of the Surinamese Buffet, a culinary legend in Southeast and world famous in Amsterdam.
At Imagine IC, the story of the Langerlust farm on the Gaasperplas and the green heritage is also given a place. In 1982 the farm was the office for the Floriade world horticultural exhibition , for which the Gaasperpark was laid out. After its function as a farm and office for the Floriade , the Langerlust farm was used as a place for culture and catering until the end of 2019. Especially for this project, personal stories were collected from people who lived, worked or recreate on Langerlust. Visitors can view the Langerlust farm – currently not open to the public – from the outside via a walk from Imagine IC.
